Abstract

Perusall is a free online digital environment, developed by colleagues at Harvard and integrated into Moodle, which transforms study from an individual process into a social one. Through innovative features that act on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, students are encouraged to collaborate in their studies by following the development of the lesson content. The environment also provides advanced analyses of student activities that enable the lecturer to direct lessons towards the content that has emerged from study as critical for student learning. Additional features also enable the lecturer to make use of automatic assessment processes and other peer-assessment processes.

During the seminar, participants will be able to experience first-hand first the Student operating mode and then the Lecturer mode, by creating and configuring a course on Perusall linked to their own Moodle courses.

Abstract

There are many positive reasons why educators should include visual elements in their teaching materials. However, students often fail to get the full benefit from the films, images, charts and graphs that educators present, so often they remain an underexploited resource.

In this practical session, we will demonstrate a number of ways teachers can exploit media such as short films, visual images, charts and graphs to encourage students to reflect, cooperate, and employ various critical thinking skills effectively so that visuals become a tool to promote active learning.

Thursday 22 May 2025, 14:30 - 16:30

The workshop will be held in Italian.

Abstract

Do we want innovative and active teaching? And what should active and innovative teaching be like? We need ancient disciplines.
Once upon a time…
Once upon a time there were oratory and eloquence. Today there is public speaking.
Once upon a time there was disputation. Today there is debate.
Once upon a time there was controversy. Today there is the talk show.
Once upon a time there was apologetics. Today there is advocacy.
The adoption of the controversial teaching method and the extension of the regulated disputation format to different disciplines have proved successful and fruitful for the acquisition of transversal skills of a cognitive, communicative and relational nature.
During the workshop, participants will learn how to make lessons more dialogic and controversial, recovering the art of disputatio and argumentative rhetoric as a teaching methodology.

Abstract

The seminar aims to explore and put into practice the teaching strategy “Think, Share, Compare”, an active and inclusive method that promotes critical thinking, collaboration and comparative reflection. Starting from concrete examples and case studies drawn from university contexts, we will analyse together the potential of this technique in building participatory learning environments.
Participants will take part in practical exercises, with the aim of directly experiencing the methodology and reflecting on its possible applications in their own disciplinary fields. The session is conceived as an interactive workshop, alternating presentation, discussion and small-group work.
The intention is to offer simple but effective tools to facilitate the active participation of students, including in contexts with a high cognitive load or those that are heterogeneous in terms of background and experience.

Abstract

This seminar aims to showcase the potential of storytelling and digital storytelling in teaching. Both traditional and digital narratives have proved effective in stimulating reflective practice, making tacit knowledge explicit and improving students' learning experience.

The seminar will begin by exploring the theoretical foundations of storytelling, examining how narratives function as cognitive tools that help students organise, contextualise and reflect on disciplinary content. The neuroscientific aspects of narration will be analysed, looking in depth at how stories activate brain processes that facilitate greater engagement, emotional connection and better retention of concepts.

Through practical examples and case studies from different disciplinary contexts, the ways in which storytelling can be implemented to develop students' future professional skills and critical thinking will be illustrated.

Abstract

Generative artificial intelligence is changing the rules of the game, but how can one move from generic use to targeted and effective teaching integration within one’s own disciplinary field?
This innovative workshop introduces an advanced methodological framework for designing, developing and implementing a truly effective AI Tutor, transforming a technological tool into a powerful “pedagogical” ally. Teachers will be guided in discovering the potential of AI Tutors, offering practical tools to support students’ learning processes and improve the teaching of their course. In addition, the workshop will seek to stimulate metacognitive reflection on one’s own teaching style.
During the workshop each participant will have the opportunity to design and create their own AI Tutor through innovative teaching strategies.
No specialist IT skills are required. It is useful to already have access (recognised login) to GPT or Gemini or Claude (preferably with a subscription).

Abstract
Starting from the assumption that university teaching is fundamentally based on knowledge of one’s own discipline, including its links with one’s research activity (content), and on the possession of a teaching methodology (didactics), the workshop aims to highlight a third component, relating to the pedagogical sphere.
The latter chiefly concerns the relational dimension and presupposes a lecturer’s stance consistent with the characteristics of the current generation of students, with the particular phase of developmental transition they are experiencing, and with their demand for education, not only of a professional nature but also connected to becoming a person, both in the subjective dimension and in the community one.

Abstract
International research evidence shows that active learning can significantly improve learning, including in STEM courses. However, implementation in university contexts with large class sizes presents challenges that cannot be ignored: spaces that do not facilitate interaction, constrained timetables and syllabuses, limited support resources. Added to these are specific disciplinary difficulties, which require targeted teaching strategies. In this seminar, we will share active learning approaches grounded in physics education research, starting from a concrete case study: an introductory Physics 1 course for Engineering. After analysing the main challenges and the decision-making process behind some teaching choices, participants will directly experience some activities, observing in particular how the adaptation to the context was carried out. The final discussion will also be an opportunity to share challenges and opportunities related to teaching innovation in large STEM courses.

Abstract
Most teachers are in the habit of giving students some form of feedback on their work and on their contributions in class. However, there is a big difference between giving feedback on what has happened and making it useful and relevant as a tool for improving students’ performance in future learning activities. Feedforward adds key elements to traditional feedback, making it future-oriented and an active component in improving students’ performance. This workshop will explain what feedforward is and underline why it is a fundamental complement to feedback. Participants will learn how to incorporate feedback into the teaching of any discipline.

Abstract

In this experiential workshop Dr. Isabel Rimanoczy will introduce a pedagogical tool - the Peer Learning Process. This is a question-based process that is used with students and faculty, and other educators of the PRME Working Group have incorporated it into their pedagogical toolbox. The Peer Learning Process is based on andragogic Action Reflection Learning (ARL[1])  principles such as tacit knowledge, relevance, social learning, reflective learning, systems, paradigm shift and integration.

Participants will have the opportunity to witness the process, then work in small teams on a current, real challenge. This will be followed by a group dialogue and debrief to extract learning and implications/applications from the experience.

[1] ARL is a learning methodology developed in Sweden in the 1970s, which Dr. Rimanoczy coded.

Title: How to design effective scientific presentations
Speaker: Professor Alan Crivellaro

Meeting for Change Agents and lecturers who have attended at least one T4L course

Registration is mandatory as places are limited

Alan crivellaroProfile: Alan Crivellaro is a wood expert. After studying at the University of Padua, he carried out scientific research at universities and research institutes in Switzerland, in the USA and at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where he currently lives. Alan has widely recognised talent in effective teaching and in explaining complex and apparently difficult topics. This talent has attracted considerable interest within and beyond the scientific community. Since 2020, he has organised seminars and workshops that improve the communication skills of scientists and lecturers.

Workshop presentation: The workshop is based on the premise that scientific presentation is a central element of a scientific career, but also a challenge for many researchers. Therefore, presenting effectively requires additional effort and guidance. The workshop on effective scientific presentations helps participants develop a set of presentation tools to learn how to excel through presentations.

The workshop is not about the "rules" of scientific language, but will facilitate understanding of one’s personal presentation style and how to improve it further.
