Rankings and sustainability
Sustainability also plays an extremely important role in the rankings that produce these main league tables.
QS WUR Sustainability Rankings is the most recent ranking in the field of environmental issues and sustainable policies. First published in 2022, it assesses Universities through eight indicators to determine environmental and social impact performance and the actual ability to generate positive change for people and the planet.
THE Impact Ranking launched by the THE (Times Higher Education) agency in 2019. This ranking assesses Universities against the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) defined in 1987 by the United Nations. It uses calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across four areas: research, administration, outreach and teaching. The THE Impact Ranking provides a snapshot of the influence of the work of Universities on the community. Specifically, it aims to assess the contribution to society’s well-being and knowledge transfer.
UI GreenMetric World University Ranking is the result of an initiative by Università Indonesiana and was launched in 2010. This ranking was the first in the world to focus on sustainability and environmental issues. It is aimed at universities worldwide and assesses the commitment and policies that Universities adopt regarding sustainability and climate change. In particular, in addition to climate change, GreenMetric focuses on the waste of water and electricity, waste recycling, the energy efficiency of buildings, and ‘green’ transport policies. On the pages dedicated to the UI GreenMetric ranking, details are available of the new methodology, introduced from the 2026 edition onwards, and of the previous methodology. The results of the University of Padua produced according to the new methodology and those relating to the previous methodology can also be consulted.
Since 2023, Università dell'Aquila has been the Italian coordinator of the working group of Italian universities, UI GreenMetric World University Ranking Network (UI GWURN), succeeding Alma Mater, which led the work from 2017 to 2022. Recordings of the most recent meetings are publicly available:
