The Course focuses on the topics of Management Engineering and Real Estate Economics. It is aimed at those who want to acquire a robust methodological background and a multidisciplinary knowledge to solve complex problems using a variety of research and analytical tools. The purpose of the Course is to train researchers (academic and non-academic), experts and professionals capable of holding senior management and/or consulting positions in the manufacturing and service industry, and in public administrations.

Starting in the 20th cycle, the Course represents the merge of two PhD courses: the one in Management Engineering and the one in Real Estate Appraisal and Land Economics. Today, the course embraces both perspectives, offering two main specializations:

  • Management Engineering, whose research areas refer to: innovation and technology management, operations and supply chain management, smart operations, sustainable process management, service management, health care management, knowledge management, strategic management, performance management, digital transformation, green management, mass customization, risk management, big data analytics, development and application of statistical tools/machine learning models for engineering management;
  •  Land Valuation and Economics, focused on research topics pertaining to: valuation theory and methodology, valuation and valorization of urban real estate, valuation and management of historical architectonic goods, land economics, valuation and management of environmental goods, smart cities, smart living, environmental management.

Both specializations place great emphasis on the plurality of perspectives with which research topics are approached, the applicability/relevance of results, and the methodological rigor. Both specializations maintain close relationships, both at the national and international level, with various academic and professional communities (of engineering, architecture, and management), as well as with businesses and public and private entities.
The aim of the training program is to enrich the background of PhD students to equip them with the competences and knowledge needed to carry out their research project.

The acquired competences refer to three main areas:

  • research methodologies (e.g. carrying out a structured literature review, selecting and applying different qualitative and quantitative methodologies according to the research objectives);
  • soft skills (e.g. communication skills, research management, team working). Competences on intellectual property management and research results exploitation are also included;
  • disciplinary, thematic competences regarding specific topics within the two specializations (e.g. innovation management, strategic management, real estate economics, environmental management and assessment).

The overall education program, all in English, lasts three years and it includes activities, both compulsory and optional, in Italy and abroad.
During the first year, doctoral students attend methodological and thematic courses that imply individual study, group work and a final assessment of learning. They may also take other courses offered by other doctoral programs at the University of Padova or other universities in Italy or abroad. During the second and third years, doctoral students are expected to attend summer schools and/or other courses and spend a period abroad aimed at deepening the research topic and/or conducting part of the empirical research.

At the end of the Program, our PhDs, as researchers, managers, management consultants, entrepreneurs and freelancers, will be able to face work challenges with an integrated and systemic approach. They will be able to use of a cross-functional and interorganizational perspective in problem analysis and the ability to integrate technological, organizational, social, economic and financial assessments in the formulation of innovative and original solutions to complex problems. The course thus trains professional figures who can, concretely and rapidly, find qualified employment within the Academia or in the manufacturing and service industry, in business consulting, public Agencies and public administration, both in Italy and abroad.
