An international vocational course that teaches students how to communicate with mastery in two European and American languages and to understand the cultural, historical, and economic-social-political framework in which they develop. Through daily and professional use, both written and oral, students will refine metalinguistic reflection skills with confidence in the sectoral languages and specific terminologies of the chosen languages. The vocation for communication and cooperation of the course is enhanced by courses in the legal, economic, and social areas as well as advanced courses in linguistics, semiotics, or computer science. Students can plan courses that increase their skills, both theoretically and applicative, in the field of translation. Students can pursue work in international cooperation institutes, cultural institutions, as well as in diplomatic and consular representation.

Characteristics and Objectives

The Master's Degree in Modern Languages for International Communication and Cooperation aims to achieve a solid language and translation competence in two European and American languages and cultures, supported by a good understanding of their cultural, historical, literary, economic, social, and political contexts.
The educational process mainly aims at refining metalinguistic reflection skills and updating knowledge on linguistic theories while training in daily and professional language use, both oral and written. The training activities mainly concern the use of specialized languages and their specific terminology, with an eye to oral and written mediation. The language courses include specialized translation paths that provide advanced theoretical and methodological competencies across a wide range of specialised domains and text types, with particular attention to the needs of the local productive system. The use of up-to-date technological tools is an integral and distinctive part of the training.
Core learning activities also include the advanced study of legal, economic, and social cultures, as well as advanced courses in information technology for translation, linguistics, semiotics, lexicography or terminography. Students can also pursue advanced study of the literature of their two specialization languages by attending supplementary courses. Furthermore, they can select other related or supplementary courses to tailor their educational project to their individual needs and professional aspirations.

Career Opportunities

Graduates will be able to take on high-responsibility roles as experts in advanced language services. This includes not only specialized translation but also terminology, technical communication, editing, and other multilingual communication professions. Their advanced language and translation skills will make them suitable for working in:
• Public and private language service providers;
International institutes for cultural and economic cooperation;
• Italian cultural and commercial institutions abroad and diplomatic and consular representations;
• International companies and national and international organizations and institutions.

Career opportunities include coordinating communications between different countries, managing multilingual interactions, and overseeing foreign branches of public and private production or service entities.
The quality and level of education also provide access to teaching careers in schools and other educational institutions, under the conditions specified by the relevant regulations, as well as to doctoral programs and academic careers in relevant scientific-disciplinary sectors.

Double degree opportunities

Students enrolled in this Master's degree programme will be offered the opportunity to apply for a Multiple Master's Degree programme in Translation within the Arqus Alliance, to obtain a double degree with one of the following universities: Granada (Spain), Jean Monnet Saint Etienne (France), Vilnius (Lithuania), Minho (Portugal), Wroclaw (Poland). At the end of the programme, students will obtain a Master's degree in Modern Languages for Communication and International Cooperation (UNIPD) and a Master's degree awarded by the destination partner university.
