Characteristics and objectives
The course in Landscape Studies offers a unique opportunity in Italy to study in depth landscape issues within a vibrant and multidisciplinary scientific environment. Landscape plays an important role in the quality of life in cities and in the countryside, in the attractiveness of places, in the revitalisation of marginal areas, and in the cultural growth and well-being of populations. New skills are required to integrate the complex issues of protection with those of sustainable development, promotion and awareness-raising. This begins with a solid knowledge of the landscapes and their representations.
The course will provide students with specific competencies and skills in order to develop a critical approach to dealing with landscape issues within different contexts. In particular, students will learn to: analyse, integrate and interpret data and knowledge with reference to both technical and humanistic aspects of landscapes; apply to landscape the principles of sustainability in environmental, economic and socio-cultural terms in accordance with the Agenda 2030 goals; develop projects for the management and promotion of landscapes; use methodologies and tools to raise awareness and participation and produce effective communication about landscape issues.
The course is characterised by practice-oriented teaching, including professional workshops, seminars and internships in collaboration with extra-academic partners; outdoor experiences and field trips; Erasmus exchanges with qualified European universities; the opportunity to carry out the degree thesis in the project-work format; active participation in events promoting landscape culture. In line with the most advanced international perspectives on the study of landscapes, this course follows the recommendations of the Declaration of Higher Education on Landscape.
The study plan covers natural and cultural, rural and urban landscape issues across a range of disciplines, such as: physical and cultural geography, landscape law, regional and landscape planning, statistics and qualitative methodologies, geographic information systems and digital landscape visualization, Anthropocene studies, landscape history and archaeology, place branding, tourism and landscape, landscape education and participation studies, creative communication and art and film studies.
The course is open to graduates with a high final GPA or certified skills from the following disciplines: human geography, humanities, social sciences, law, architecture, urban planning, agronomy, physical geography, and/or natural sciences.
Occupational opportunities
Graduates will learn how to work in public and private bodies, in enterprises and organisations in the following areas: support to landscape planning and management; landscape promotion within the tourism, leisure and recreational fields; development of landscape education, participation and communication activities. Graduates may also consider a career as geography teachers in schools, upon obtaining their teaching qualification and successfully participating in calls for teaching, pursuant the current regulations.
