Characteristics and objectives
The Curriculum in Historical Sciences provides specialist training in the field of history, covering the period from Late Antiquity to the present.
The main aims of the course are to provide students with:
- a thorough knowledge of historical themes and processes relating to one of the three traditional periodisation segments (the Middle Ages, the Early Modern and Modern time and the Contemporary Period); - an in-depth knowledge of the debates that run through contemporary historiography; the ability to deal with themes and methods from other disciplines (social sciences, philosophy, literature) that are functional to their educational path.
In class, the reconstruction of the past is carried out from different analytical perspectives (from political and institutional history, to cultural, social, environmental, economic, religious and gender history), which allows students to come into contact with and discuss the main historiographical methods and schools.
The course is also structured to give students the opportunity to acquire the essential concepts for a critical and conscious use of the various types of documentary material. Finally, among the subjects classified as optional ('Affini e integrative'), the course includes courses in literary and philosophical subjects, which are not only valuable for a general education in the humanities, but can also provide access to a career as a secondary school teacher.
At the end of the Master's Degree in Historical Sciences, students will have acquired a critical knowledge of the main historical phenomena, will be able to independently identify the methods and tools useful for their reconstruction, and will have acquired the ability to communicate the knowledge acquired in an appropriate way.

The Mobility Studies curriculum is based on the notion that the humanities, and history in particular, can play a pivotal role in the understanding of mobility phenomena. The course has been meticulously designed to achieve two primary objectives. Firstly, it will equip students with a comprehensive understanding of the movement of people, objects and ideas within specific historical and geographical contexts. Secondly, it will furnish students with the analytical tools necessary to comprehend human actions within the frameworks of time and space. Thus, students will be equipped to analyse phenomena such as globalisation, migration, exile and tourism, emphasising their role in shaping societies and cultural identities. Seminar-style teaching will involve engagement with documentary sources and materials, equipping students with the necessary tools to analyse the movement of people, texts, images, goods, and ideas by various social actors in both the past and present.
The programme encompasses modules on a range of topics, including 'History', 'History and Social Sciences', 'Theory and Methods' (with a particular focus on Digital Humanities), and 'Literature, Law and Social Sciences'. In some specific cases, the study plan is blocked to allow students a more solid and coherent education in the humanities or social sciences.
The programme includes workshops and internships. A limited number of selected students may be eligible for a double degree programme with Lancaster University (UK). Students completing the double degree programme will be awarded a Master's degree in Historical Sciences – curriculum Mobility Studies from the University of Padua and either an MA in Sociology or in English Literary Studies from Lancaster University.
