Characteristics and objectives
The course aims to train linguists who have acquired solid theoretical and methodological competence in the analysis of natural language with respect to its universal properties as well as to the specific description of various linguistic systems. Formal analysis of linguistic structures will start from the study of synchronic systems, which will then be integrated by a diachronic investigation. Theoretical and historical linguistics constitute the kernel foundations of the didactic organization of the course.
Students will apply the most recent linguistic theories to the analysis of linguistic systems and master methodologies which are appropriate to analyze the different linguistic levels. Courses on the foundations of phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, and historical linguistics are foreseen. Students will also acquire advanced competence in the domain of linguistic variation, since the master offers the opportunity to further investigate topics in dialectology and linguistic variation.
Special attention will be devoted to deepening the link between linguistics and teaching methodologies with particular consideration of Italian. The course is organized with a single curriculum, but in addition to the basic disciplines the pool of courses is structured so as to offer to students the possibility to personalize her choices around a single thematic area.

Occupational opportunities
The degree prepares students to jobs requiring a specialization in linguistic education, editorial work, communication, to jobs in international institutions or in public services devoted to intercultural communication, as well as computer applications to communication (like creating data bases and data banks, linguistic archives), jobs which require linguistic expertise in creation and management of websites, automatic translation, automatic speech processing and production etc. Collaboration in teams working on rehabilitation of speech (for instance audiology, neurolinguistics, speech pathologies). The degree also prepares to take on a regular job as a teacher in schools once the other requirements for habilitation are fulfilled or to scientific research in linguistics.
