Characteristics and objectives
The objective of the degree course is to provide advanced training in the field of the historical-artistic disciplines with essential skill sets in the various sectors of figurative arts. In a chronological sense, these span from the Middle Ages to the modern and contemporary times; in geographic terms, from the Byzantine world to Western and non-European art; in topical terms, from the historical to the methodological disciplines. All of these sectors are traditionally present in the University of Padua.
The program also provides theoretical and applied knowledge to issues of management and conservation of historical-artistic heritage, with attention to technical features and diverse artistic expressions (including miniatures, drawing, goldsmith’s art, and applied arts). Those who obtain their second-cycle degree will have conducted in-depth study of the issues relating to the history of criticism, collection, and conservation of historical-artistic heritage. In addition, they will be able to employ the main technological instruments within their specific area of expertise.

Occupational opportunities
Graduates acquire skills that qualify them:
-to carry out functions of significant responsibility within central and local administrations of cultural heritage (State, regions, provinces, and municipalities) and in specific institutions such as museums, superintendence offices, libraries, media libraries, and catalog offices;
-to work in the cultural industry, private foundations, at restoration sites and to operate in cooperatives that provide services linked to cultural heritage by offering specialized expertise;
-to engage in private practice as art experts.
Those who obtain the second-cycle degree in Art History will also have access to masters and research doctorates and may then engage in school teaching, following completion of suitable certification programs and public examinations as required by current legislation.
