
A course that instructs students how to read and interpret the literary production and profiles of the most significant authors of the ancient, modern, and contemporary world with linguistic, philological, and historical-literary methods by inserting the tools learned in the texts with a correct historical-critical perspective. Students can choose between two curricula, Ancient Literature or Modern Literature. Ancient Literature offers an in-depth analysis of the ancient world while Modern Literature is dedicated to the medieval, modern, and contemporary world. The Italian language plays an essential role in both curricula as its literary richness offers an educational base that ranges from history to geography, from philosophy to archeology, as well as from art to entertainment. Characteristics and objectives
The Bachelor's Degree in Humanities aims to train graduates with expertise in literary, philological, linguistic, theoretical-comparative, historical-geographical, and artistic-archaeological disciplines, spanning from antiquity to the contemporary era, as well as in various methodologies for text analysis.
Graduates will acquire specific skills for preserving, transmitting, and promoting Italy's literary and linguistic heritage, while also developing a broad, interdisciplinary education that fosters dialogue among different fields of the humanities, effective communication of research findings, and the enrichment of their professional profile.
The Course has two curricula, Ancient Humanities and Modern Humanities, with some core subjects in common (Italian Literature, History of the Italian Language, Institutions of Linguistics, Geography, Latin Literature) and others specific to each curriculum (for the ancient one: Greek Literature, Latin Composition, Roman History, Greek Philology and Greek Grammar, Latin Philology and Latin Grammar, Greek History, Romance Philology, Byzantine Literature, Medieval Latin Literature and Early Christian Literature; for the modern one: French, English, Spanish, and German Literatures; Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary History; Literary Theory, Comparative Literature, and Rhetoric (theory and history); Medieval Latin Literature, Dante Philology, Italian Philology, Medieval and Humanist Philology; Contemporary Italian Literature; Italian Stylistics and Metrics, Latin Philology, Latin Grammar, and Italian Dialectology).
The two curricula also have a considerable number of electives in archaeology, history, art, philosophy, performing arts and foreign literatures (54 CFU for the Ancient Curriculum and 87 for the Modern Curriculum), to which are added 18 CFU of free-choice . Both curricula include lectures, seminars, lab activities, and individual study. Modern Humanities also include an internship at local institutions, companies, or organizations.
Occupational opportunities
Graduates holding a Bachelor's Degree in Lettere will be qualified to undertake professional roles in both public and private institutions, particularly in the fields of culture (such as work in libraries, archives, or as cultural consultants), publishing (as editorial consultants, editors, or translators), media and journalism (especially in the cultural sector), advertising (as copywriters), and the performing arts.
Those who choose to continue their studies with a Master's degree will also be able to pursue a career in secondary school teaching.
The Degree Programme has established a strong and extensive network of international exchange opportunities, both through the Erasmus programme and through numerous seminars featuring faculty from international universities. Further opportunities are provided by participation in BIP (Blended Intensive Programmes) and VIP (Virtual International Programme) initiatives.
From Bachelor's degree to Master's degree
The Bachelor's Degree Programme grants access to the following Master's Degree classes: LM-14 (Modern Philology), LM-15 (Classical Literature and Ancient History), and LM-39 (Linguistics), in accordance with the admission procedures specified in the respective calls for applications.
