Meet Aref

About myself

I am currently pursuing my PhD in the Agripolis campus, at the TESAF department, after my studies in Food and Health. I was looking for an interdisciplinary course where I could find connections with sustainability and learn how to promote good health for humans and nature, and that led me to select the University of Padua's Food and Health degree programme to continue my education abroad. Briefly about my interests: I like getting involved in the numerous cultural activities and events offered by the University. As a fan of food, I like exploring different recipes, especially Italian ones, and using food to better appreciate different cultures. I also enjoy nature, taking photographs, and listening to music, as it's a common language and it gives a rhythmic backdrop to my experiences.

What did you like the most about the Food and Health degree programme? Why would you recommend it to other students?

I strongly recommend this programme because it creates a bridge between agriculture and sustainability, food and health, making it an ideal and impactful choice for those who are looking for an interdisciplinary course. In addition, the international class creates a great multicultural environment where to exchange different cultures, traditions, foods and friendships.

What did you like most about your time at UNIPD?

The positive aspects extend beyond the university itself to the diverse and captivating cultural dynamics. I’ve met students from different parts of the world. This cultural diversity is a unique characteristic of UNIPD and also of the Agricultural campus, where numerous departments provide many insights into different sectors and fields. This diversity contributes to the creation of a professional academic environment within a friendly and collaborative atmosphere.

What advice would you give to students wishing to study abroad?

My advice is first to search for a country in which you would love to live in, and a university that offers a course of interest for you. Second, check as much as possible on the Internet, from people who are already or have been in that country and university, about the culture, traditions, foods… and the administrative and bureaucratic aspects. For sure you will find some surprises, but trying to know them in advance can help you to be well prepared for your staying. After arrival… be open minded, make new discoveries, be engaged with the extra activities of the university and the city, establish relationships with people coming from your own country to preserve something familiar, but enjoy and try to create friendships with the local people, and try to make a bridge among them!

What are some things people might not know about studying in Italy?

Something that was new for me is the exam session! In my country, you have only one possibility to take an exam but here you can take it more than once and you decide in which session to take them and retake them in the next session if you want to improve your grade!

What funny things have you experienced since being here?

Since being here, I’ve met students and people from different countries and environments. Specifically, regarding Italy and Italian people, I noticed something that is a little funny for me. All over the world, Italians are recognized for their special way of communicating with hands and with all of their body. But there’s more! Italian is a common language, but if you talk with Italians from different regions, you can discover that their dialects are like languages, and in some cases someone from Veneto is not able to understand someone else from Sicily and vice versa!

What do you like most about the City of Padova and why? How do you spend your spare time there?

I like the gardens and parks, and the Christmas events and lights in December. I enjoy walking in nature and sometimes I like getting lost in new places and in the streets of this city. Padova is perfect for students who want to meet each other in some places like Portello, Prato della Valle or in the city centre and you can easily walk through the city.
