Andrea Sanson is Associate Professor of Experimental Condensed Matter Physics at the Physics and Astronomy Department of the University of Padova, Italy. On 31 May 2021 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the role of first-class professor (Full Professor) for the sector 02/B1 Experimental Physics of Matter.

He obtained the master degree in Physics with Honors from the University of Trento in 2000, and the PhD in Physics in 2003. In the same year he won the Young Scientist Award from the Italian Society of Synchrotron Light. After various postdoc positions in different research institutes (University of Trento, Italian National Research Council, University of Verona), in 2011 he joined the University of Padova as Tenured Researcher. Since 2019 he is Associate Professor and Member of the Academic Board for the PhD program in Materials Science and Technology, where he teaches the XAFS spectroscopy course. In 2022 he served as High-Level Foreign Expert for the University of Science and Technology Beijing.

Prof. Sanson’s research fields include structural and dynamical aspects of condensed matter physics, focusing the attention on negative thermal expansion materials and thermal expansion tailoring, super-ionic conductors, ferroelectric/ferromagnetic materials, semiconductors and, more in general, crystalline materials of functional interest. He conducts his research by means of x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), Raman and IR spectroscopy, lattice-dynamics simulations, also performed by ab initio methods.

Prof. Sanson is author/co-author of more than 100 SCI articles (12 as single-author and 22 more as first or corresponding author, with about 2800 citations and h-index=32) and over seventy contributions to national and international conferences, including invited talks. His publications include articles in high impact factor journals such as Adv. Mater., Nature Comm., Adv. Energy Mater., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Nano Res., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Phys. Rev. Lett., Chem. Mater., Mater. Res. Letters. His scientific activity by synchrotron light has been selected for ESRF Highlights (2006, 2008, 2009, 2017), Elettra Top Stories (2017, 2018), Elettra Highlights (2017, 2018, 2020), European Physical Society News (2017). In 2022 he received the "Best Paper Award" from the journal Microstructures, and in 2023 he was Chair of the IV International Symposium on Negative Thermal Expansion and Related Materials (ISNTE-4) held in Padova. Finally, he is Associate Editor for the journals Frontiers in Physics, Microstructures, Frontiers in Chemistry, Editorial Board Member for the journals MDPI Materials and Tungsten, and Referee for more than 40 scientific journals.

Thesis proposals

Thermal expansion is a problem in many technological applications, especially when thermal stability is required. Moreover, different materials in contact with each other can expand in different ways causing various problems, including the breakage of the materials. The control of thermal expansion therefore becomes fundamental for the design of new materials, and this is possible thanks to the use of unconventional materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) properties.

Master/Graduate theses are available concerning the study of all the physical-chemical phenomena connected to NTE and to the control of thermal expansion, such as chemical intercalation, chemical substitution, nanoscale effects, and so on. In this context, a fruitful collaboration is active with the research group of Prof. Jun Chen of the University of Science and Technology Beijing.
