Gianmaria Silvello is a Full Professor in the Department of Information Engineering at the University of Padua, a position he has held since December 2024. Before this role, he held the position of Associate Professor from 2020 to 2024, Assistant Professor from 2018 to 2020, during which he was on a tenure-track path within the same department. Gianmaria's academic pursuits extend beyond the borders of Italy, as evidenced by his extensive research activities abroad. Notably, he served as a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Computer and Information Science of the University of Pennsylvania from February 2016 to March 2018. Furthermore, he enriched his academic experience as a Visiting Researcher at the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh from 2009 to 2010.
Gianmaria Silvello worked on several European Projects, shaping the landscape of data integration and semantic modeling. His pivotal role spearheading projects like HEREDITARY and EXA-MODE underscores his unwavering commitment to advancing scientific frontiers. As HEREDITARY's principal investigator and project coordinator, Silvello is leading a consortium of 18 partners in designing a groundbreaking Polystore system for managing multimodal biomedical data, with a total project budget of €11,041,958.7. Similarly, his leadership in EXA-MODE, where he coordinated semantic knowledge discovery and visualization, highlights his ability to drive large-scale analytics initiatives for multimodal data.
From 2017 to 2018, served as a member of the Department of Information Engineering's council at the University of Padova. Since 2018, he has been a doctoral School of Information Engineering faculty member. From 2022 to 2024, has been a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Danish Data Science Academy, selected based on scientific merits. In 2019, served as an external expert on the evaluation committee for H2020 projects, in 2025 he was an external expert for the ERC starting grants.
Gianmaria Silvello received the Best Paper Award at ECIR 2018 for "Statistical Stemmers." In 2020, he won the IP&M Ph.D. Paper Award for "Gender stereotype reinforcement." Also, he earned the Best Student Paper Award at TPDL 2023 for "How to cite a Web ranking." and an honorable mention for the best paper award at AAAI HCOMP 2024. These awards highlight his impactful contributions to information access and management.

Research Area
My research focuses on curated databases, emphasizing data citation, accessibility, and interoperability. I've developed automated citation systems for hierarchical datasets and pioneered machine learning-based frameworks for bibliographic referencing. I've also created efficient keyword-based search systems for relational and graph databases, facilitating data retrieval. I've contributed to ontologies for computational pathology and neurosciences in data modeling, enabling automated entity extraction for disease diagnosis. A notable project, HEREDITARY, aims to revolutionize disease detection and treatment preparation by integrating multimodal health data and ensuring privacy compliance. My work spans data citation, search methodologies, and ontological modeling, aiming to enhance scientific research and healthcare.
I've been actively involved in enhancing interoperability in the context of digital libraries. For years, I've served on the program committees of major scientific conferences such as TPDL and JCDL. Additionally, I am president of the steering committee for the Italian Conference in the Field (IRCDL) and serve as the deputy chair for the European conference (TPDL). I've organized and provided scientific coordination for several editions of IRCDL and the most recent two editions of TPDL in 2022 and 2023. My leadership in these roles underscores my commitment to advancing interoperability and collaboration within the digital library community.
