Degree in Agricultural Science (1979), researcher (1983), associated professor (1992) and full professor in “Poultry and Rabbit Science and Aquaculture” from 1999 at the Faculty of Agriculture Science, University of Padova. Teacher of the subjects “Poultry and rabbit production” and “Aquaculture and fish quality” at the University of Padova (Faculties of Agriculture Science, Veterinary Medicine, Biology). President of the Master course on Animal Science and Technology (2013-). Head of the Department of Animal Science, University of Padova from 1999 to 2002. Member of Ethical Committee for animal experimentation of the University of Padova. Tutor of Italian and foreign students following the PhD course in Animal Science of the University of Padova. Member of International Jury for PhD Thesis in France (Toulose) and Spain (Madrid and Valencia).
President (from 2009-2016), Vice-president (1996-2000; 2017-2021) and Treasurer (2000-2008) of the World Rabbit Science Association (WRSA). President (2004-2009) and member (1994-2001; 2016-2021) of the Executive Board of the Italian Rabbit Science Association (ASIC). Member of the Scientific Committee of the 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 11th and 12th World Rabbit Congresses. President of the Organizing Committee of the 9th World Rabbit Congress (Verona, Italy, June 2008). Founding member of the EGRAN (European Group on Rabbit Nutrition).
Associate Editor (Nutrition Section) (2000-2006) of the journal World Rabbit Science. Referee of national and international scientific journal dealing with animal science (Journal of Animal Science, Animal Feed Science and Technology, Animal Research, World Rabbit Science, Animal Science, Livestock Production Science, Reproduction Nutrition Development, Italian Journal of Animal Science).
National co-ordinator of the UE research program FAIR3 1651 "European harmonization of rabbit feed evaluation" and participating as a National Expert to the UE program COST 848 "Multi-facetted research in rabbits". Coordinator of Italian research groups in projects of national relevance (P.R.I.N.) concerning rabbit science. Coordinator of research groups in projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MIPAF) on the characterization of sea bass from different rearing systems.
He published scientific papers on international journals (Scopus: papers 101; Citations 2076; H-index 27), and more than 400 papers, book chapters and communication and invited papers at national and international congress. He collaborates with Italian and foreign researchers working in the field of rabbit and poultry science, and aquaculture.
The scientific activity dealt mainly the field of rabbit nutrition and feeding, the harmonisation of methodologies to evaluate the nutritive value of feeds, the studies on the carcass and meat quality, the energy metabolism and the measurements of indirect calorimetry in does at different physiological states and in weaning and growing rabbits. Among the latest researches, he studied the effect of dietary protein levels on nitrogen excretion, the effect of soluble fibre on animal health and the relationship between breeding systems and welfare in growing rabbits, broiler chickens and laying hens. Research in aquaculture concerned meat quality evaluation, fish and mollusc contamination and origin identification, aquaponics, also using innovative analytical procedures (NIRS, mass spectrometry, ICP) and evaluation of impacts and sustainability (LCA).
