Daniele Vecchiato is Associate Professor of German and Translation Studies at the University of Padua, Italy.

After studying German, English and Comparative Literature in Venice, Marburg, and Berlin, he obtained his PhD in German Literature at the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice in the framework of a binational doctoral agreement with the Humboldt University of Berlin. Before coming to Padua, he was a Marie Curie Research Fellow at King’s College London (2018-2019) and a postdoctoral researcher at the Humboldt University (2014-2017), where he carried out different research projects funded by a Humboldt Postdoc Scholarship (2014), a Fritz Thyssen Foundation Fellowship (2014-2016), and a Gerda Henkel Foundation Fellowship (2017).

He has published extensively on German literature from the 18th to the 21st century, including a multi-award winning monograph on the presentation of the Thirty Years' War in German literature and historiography of the Age of Goethe ('Verhandlungen mit Schiller', 2015), edited volumes on literary translation ('Kreative Praktiken des literarischen Übersetzens um 1800', 2019) and contemporary German literature ('Versi per dopodomani. Percorsi di lettura nell'opera di Durs Grünbein', 2019; '#CoronaTheater. Der Wandel der performativen Künste in der Pandemie', 2022) as well as two special issues on German law and literature ('Legal Cultures in the Age of Goethe' and 'Staging Justice. Trials and the Law on the German Stage', 2022). He also works as a literary translator (German > Italian). Book-length translations include Urs Widmer’s play 'Top Dogs' (2012) and Carl-Christian Elze’s collection of poems 'langsames ermatten im labyrinth' (2018).

His current research endeavours revolve around the history, theory and poetics of literary translation in the German-speaking countries, theatre and performance studies, gender studies, and the interactions between history, literature, and social justice.
