Research Interests
My primary research interests are in natural language processing, specifically in natural language parsing and formal language models for natural language. I am also interested in formal language theory.

Professional Background
I received a Ph.D. in computer science from University of Padua, Italy, in 1990. Between 1990 and 1993 I first joined the Institute for Scientific and Technological Research (ITC-IRST) in Trento, Italy, as a junior researcher, and later the Institute for Research in Cognitive Science (IRCS) at University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA, as a post-doctoral fellow. Since 1994, I am joining the Department of Information Engineering, University of Padua, Italy, where at present I am a full professor.

I have been serving as chair of the European Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (EACL) for years 2009-10. I am/have been serving in the editorial boards of Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics, Research on Language and Computation, Computational Linguistics and Grammars. I have been a member of the standing committee of the Formal Grammar conference for years 2005-08. In 2001 I have served as co-chair of the program committee of the 39th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL-2001) and as program committee chair of the 7th International Workshop on Parsing Technologies (IWPT-2001).
