Full Professor of Educational Linguistics at the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies at the University of Padua, where he also teaches Sociolinguistics, Didactics of Italian L2 and Legal English.
He is president of the Italian Society of Language Didactics and Educational Linguistics (DILLE), of which he was also a co-founder.
Born on 24 January 1971 in Rovigo, where he graduated from the Liceo Scientifico 'P. Paleocapa'. After studying for a few semesters at the Universities of Warwick and Reading in Great Britain and in Germany, he graduated cum laude in Foreign Languages and Literatures at Ca' Foscari University in Venice with a socio-phonetics thesis on the London dialect, an extract of which was published in the Annals of Ca' Foscari. He then obtained a Master's degree in Teaching and Promotion of Italian Language and Culture to Foreigners (ITALS)at the same University. He attended a PhD in Linguisticscourse at the University of Pisa, with long periods of study in South Africa, and from 2002 to 2005 he was researcher in Didactics of Modern Languages at the University of Bari. Since 2014, he has been a member of the Scientific and Organisational Committee of PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) at the Rome headquarters of the Dante Alighieri Society.
He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Melbourne (Australia), the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban (South Africa), the University of Malta, Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu (Nepal), the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (Argentina), Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest (Hungary), the Universität Hamburg (Germany), the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (Spain), the Latvijas Universitate, Riga (Latvia) and Lumière Lyon 2 (France).
He was a lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at Ca' Foscari University of Venice for 10 years and editorial director of the journal ITALS. Didactics and Linguistics of Italian as a Foreign Language. He is a member of the Scientific Committees of many Italian and international journals and series on glottodidactics and linguistics.
Since 2017, he has been editor of the journal RILA. Rassegna italiana di linguistica applicata (founded by Renzo Titone in 1969) and co-editor of the journal ISSA. Italian Studies in Southern Africa/Studi di italianistica nell'Africa australe.
He is also founder and general editor of Mondadori's "La fiera della lingue" series of volumes.
Since 2017, he has been a member of the National Council of ANILS (Associazione Nazionale Insegnanti Lingue Straniere), with responsibility for international relations and relations with other language associations.
He has been a member of the Accademia dei Concordi in Rovigo since 2007 and a member of its Board of Directors since 2018.
In the two-year period 2019-'21 he was Secretary General of the FIPLV Fédération Internationale des Professeurs de Langues Vivantes.
His main areas of research concern educational linguistics, the didactics of modern languages (in particular Italian L2/LS, English and Spanish), the didactics of sociolinguistic aspects in foreign languages, sociolinguistics, language policy, early bilingualism.
He has held courses, seminars and conferences in over 50 countries on all 5 continents.
He is the author of around 150 scientific publications in national and international venues.
His most recent volume is entitled Education and Language Policy. Theory and Practice, Rome, Bulzoni 2022.
