Research Area

The research activity of Prof. Giulio Cozzi first considered the study of the protein feeding of the dairy cow. Much of this research was conducted at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (USA) working in the staff of Dr. Polan. Forage conservation techniques have also been studied to enhance the nutritional properties of maize silage, grass and legume fodder. A relevant part of the research on the dairy cows considered the Alpine environment and in particular the analysis of the various livestock systems that operate in this territory. The research unit of Prof. Cozzi has carried out various researches on behalf of the Agriculture Department of the Veneto Region with the aim of defining some guidelines for dairy farmers operating in the mountains. In this context, prof. Cozzi is currently coordinator of the working group on mountain livestock farming of the European Association of Animal Production (EAAP).
In the field of beef production, numerous experiments analyzed specific housing and feeding strategies for beef cattle and veal calves, evaluating the production performance infra vitam and post mortem and the quality of the meat.
More recently, Prof. Giulio Cozzi addressed the animal welfare issue of beef and dairy cattle. Many of these studies were carried out with the financial support from the European Union as part of the project "Chain management of veal calf welfare" and more recently, as part of the integrated Welfare Quality project (www.welfarequality.net). In 2009, the research unit of prof. Cozzi was involved in the ALCASDE project (www.alcasde.eu) funded by the Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection of the European Union (DG-SANCO) and aimed at studying alternatives to the current practice of dehorning in cattle. From 2017, the research group of prof. Cozzi is involved in the European GenTore project (www.GenTore.eu), aimed at improving the resilience and efficiency of beef and dairy cattle against environmental and pathological disturbances.
