Luca Carturan is Associate Professor at the Department of Land, Environment, Agriculture and Forestry (University of Padova). He graduated in Forest and Environmental Sciences in 2003 at the University of Padova. In 2010 he obtained a Ph.D. in Environmental Hydronomy with topic “Climate change effects on the cryosphere and hydrology of high-altitude catchments”. His research experience encompasses snow and glacier hydrology, energy and mass balance modeling on seasonal snowpacks and glaciers, climatic sensitivity of the cryosphere (glaciers, snow cover and permafrost), glacial and periglacial geomorphology, climatology and meteorology of high altitude catchments, remote sensing of snow and glaciers, rock glacier and permafrost dynamics and hydrology. He gained a 20-year experience in the measurement of glacier mass balance. Member of the Italian Glaciological Committee, since 2002 he coordinates the mass balance measurements on Careser glacier (Ortles-Cevedale), carrying on the longest series for the Italian Alps. He is national correspondent for this mass balance series and for that on La Mare Glacier at the World Glacier Monitoring Service. He cooperates with various Italian and foreign universities, and with public institutions and provinces of the Eastern Italian Alps. In particular, he cooperates with the World Glacier Monitoring Service, the Department of Geography, University of Zurich (Switzerland), the School of Earth Sciences, Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, The Ohio State University (USA), the Institute of Botany, University of Innsbruck (Austria), the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation, TU Wien (Austria). He also cooperates with the Provinces of Trento and Bolzano and with the Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, where he is involved in monitoring and research activities concerning glaciers, permafrost and rock glaciers. He is author of 47 peer-reviewed scientific publications (Scopus: 932 citations, h-index = 20, 09-10-2023).
