Received the Hydraulic Civil Engineering degree with honours in 1991 at the University of Padova, Italy. In 1994 he received the International Award ``Paolo Gatto'', Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, for the modeling of the aquifer system underlying the Venice Lagoon. He is Associate Professor of Subsurface Hydrology at the Dept. of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering, University of Padova (Italy) and co-founder of M3E S.r.l., spin-off of the University of Padova. He is associated scientist at the Italian National Research Council, the Key Laboratory of Land Subsidence Monitoring and Prevention, and the Key Laboratory of Earth Fissures Geological Disaster, Ministry of Land and Resources, China. He is chair of the IAHS/UNESCO-IHP "Land Subsidence International Initiative". His research interests concern modelling of flow in confined/phreatic aquifer systems, land subsidence due to natural sediment compaction, peat oxidation, groundwater fluid withdrawal, and hydrocarbon production, together with the geomechanical issues related to fluid withdrawal/injection such as earth fissuring and induced seismicity, long-term evolution of transitional environments because of sedimentation and consolidation, fresh/saltwater exchange and mixing in coastal areas. He has been involved in national and international research projects, including programs funded by the UNESCO, European Union, the European, German and Italian Space Agencies, Italian national and regional governments, the Geological Survey of Jiangsu Province, the State Supervision of Mines of The Netherlands, the Venice Water Authority, oil and energy production companies. He is the author and co-author of the book “Venice Shall Rise Again - Engineered Uplift of Venice through Seawater Injection” and of more than 280 publications in international journals (150) and proceedings of international conferences (130). His current H-index is 52 (Google Scholar, April 2024).
