Giuliana Tomasella is full Professor of Museology, Art Criticism and Restoration at the Department of Cultural Heritage, University of Padua. Her studies have focused on the relations between art and politics during fascism; on the origin of art history as an autonomous discipline; and on the study of artistic debate in twentieth-century reviews. In recent years, she has investigated the role of art in support of colonialism. Her recent works include Esporre l’Italia coloniale. Interpretazioni dell’alterità (2017), Art and Colonialism: the ‘Overseas Lands’ in the History of Italian Painting (1934-1940) (‘Predella journal of visual arts’, 2020), Dire l'arte. Percorsi critici dall’antichità al primo Novecento (2020) (with Marta Nezzo), Anversa 1930: l’Italia all’ “Exposition Internationale Coloniale, Maritime et d'Art Flamand” (“Il Capitale Culturale” 2024) She edited, with Julien Bobineau, the proceedings of the international conference held in Wuerzburg on Colonial Objects and Bodies in Europe. New challenges and perspectives on the decolonization of cultural heritage (2024). She currently leads the National Project (PRIN) dedicated to COnstruction and DEconstruction of Colonial Imagery in 20th-century Italy: cultural heritage and forms of representation - CODEC
