Luca Spiezia, MD, PhD
Associated Professor of Internal Medicine
Department of Medicine
University of Padova, Padova Italy

Luca Spiezia, MD received his medical degree from the University of Padova
School of Medicine in Padova, Italy. He completed his internship and residency in hematology and internal medicine at the University of Padova, School of Medicine in Padova, Italy.

Dr. Spiezia is Professor of Medicine at the University of Padova School of Medicine in Padova, Italy. He is a Fellow of the Italian Society for the Study of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (SISET), Italian Association of Hemophilia Centre (AICE) and Italian Society of Angiology and Vascular Pathology (SIAPAV).

Dr. Spiezia carries out clinical and laboratory study and research on hereditary and acquired defects of coagulation, both in the thrombotic and in the hemorrhagic field. In relation to thrombotic disease, dr. Spiezia devoted himself to the study of congenital and acquired thrombophilic diseases, both in relation to their diagnosis and in relation to the clinical implications and the presence of these sdr. prothrombotic involves. Dr. Spiezia also dedicated himself to the study of new oral anticoagulant drugs both in the treatment of venous thrombotic disease (e.g. deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) and in the prophylaxis of cardioembolism in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation. In relation to the hemorrhagic disease, dr. Spiezia devoted himself to clinical and basic research on both the main forms of hemophilia (e.g. von Willebrand's disease, Haemophilia A and B) and on rare coagulation defects (e.g. defect of factor V, factor VII, factor XIII, fibrinogen, etc.). Basic research has resulted in the characterization of new bleeding defects and in the study of the clinical relevance of bleeding syndromes especially in relation to rare coagulation defects. Dr. Spiezia also devoted himself to the study of the treatment of both congenital and acquired bleeding. In relation to the research activity, deserves particular mention the study of thrombotic disease, hemorrhagic disease and complex coagulation pathologies, with both second and third level laboratory tests (e.g. thrombin-generation) and with point-of-care techniques (thromboelastometry / graphy and aggregometry). In relation to thrombotic disease, Dr. Spiezia devoted himself to study the role that these techniques may have in identifying the presence of a prothrombotic state both in the internal, in the intensive care, and in the surgical field. In relation to the haemorrhagic disease dr. Spiezia focused on investigating the role played by these techniques in the diagnosis and management of severe bleeding in both the internist and surgical patient.

He is Associated Editor for Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine section Thrombosis. He is a reviewer for many journals.

Dr. Spiezia’s research studies, articles, letters, and editorials have been published in over
200 peer-reviewed journals including The New England Journal of Medicine, Blood, Haematologica, Thrombosis Haemostasis, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Haemophilia, Clinical Applied Thrombosis and Haemostasis, Blood Transfusion and Thrombosis Research.
