FFull professor of Modern Language Teaching at the Department of Linguistic and Literary Studies at the University of Padua, where he also teaches Sociolinguistics, Teaching Italian as a Second Language, Approaches and Methods for the Development of Early Bilingualism, and Legal English.
He is president of the Italian Society for Language Teaching and Educational Linguistics (DILLE), of which he was also co-founder. Born on 24 January 1971 in Rovigo, where he obtained his high school diploma from the Liceo Scientifico “P. Paleocapa”. After studying for several semesters at the Universities of Warwick and Reading in Great Britain and in Germany, he graduated cum laude in Foreign Languages and Literature from Ca' Foscari University in Venice with a thesis on the socio-phonetics of the London dialect, an excerpt of which was published in the Annali di Ca' Foscari. He then obtained an ITALS Master's degree in Teaching and Promotion of Italian Language and Culture to Foreigners from the same university. He attended a PhD programme in Linguistics at the University of Pisa, with long periods of study in South Africa, and from 2002 to 2005 he was a researcher in Modern Language Teaching at the University of Bari. Since 2014, he has been a member of the Scientific Committee of PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) at the headquarters of the Dante Alighieri Society in Rome. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Melbourne (Australia), the University of KwaZulu Natal in Durban (South Africa), the University of Malta, Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu (Nepal), the Universidad Nacional de Tucumán (Argentina), Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest (Hungary), the University of Hamburg (Germany), the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), the University of Latvia, Riga (Latvia) and Lumière Lyon 2 (France), Gdańsk (Poland). For 10 years, he was a lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at Ca' Foscari University in Venice and editorial director of the ITALS magazine. Teaching and linguistics of Italian as a foreign language. He is a member of the scientific committees of many Italian and international journals and series on language teaching and linguistics. Since 2017, he has been editor of the journal RILA. Rassegna italiana di linguistica applicata (founded by Renzo Titone in 1969) and co-editor of the journal ISSA. Italian Studies in Southern Africa/Studi di italianistica nell'Africa australe. He is also the founder and director of the Mondadori book series La fiera delle lingue. Since 2007, he has been an ordinary member of the Accademia dei Concordi in Rovigo. From 2019 to 2021, he was Secretary General of the FIPLV Fédération Internationale des Professeurs de Langues Vivantes. His main areas of research concern educational linguistics, modern language teaching (in particular Italian L2/LS, English and Spanish), the teaching of sociolinguistic aspects in foreign languages, sociolinguistics, language policy and early bilingualism. He has held courses, seminars and conferences in over 50 countries on all 5 continents. He is the author of approximately 160 scientific publications in national and international journals.
