Research Area

Rivers and city: an ambivalent relationship

The aim of the research is to bring out new meanings, practices and policies in the urban stretches of Italian rivers. It is hypothesized that, once the instrumental functions of the urban rivers are over, these have been reduced to recreational or gentrified places with ambivalent socio-environmental effects. Three aspects will be analyzed: socio-spatial formations, power games and redevelopment projects. Research methods are based on community studies and eco-volunteer narratives. The research starts with the cities of the Po basin, to continue in the next years with central and southern Italy towns.

Thesis proposals

both three-year and master's theses are proposed on the following topics: local development, environmental issues, climate change, water management, civic and environmental volunteering, renewable sources of energy, marginal communities, territories and landscapes. In particular, two topics are appreciated in this phase: the food-water-energy nexus and integrated policies for the management of inland waters
