Giampiero Naletto (GN) has concentrated his research activities on the realization of innovative optical instrumentation, mainly but not exclusively for space and ground astronomical applications.
GN has participated to the development and realization of several space instruments (UVCS/SOHO, FUSE, and OSIRIS/Rosetta, STC/Simbiosys/BepiColombo, and METIS/Solar Orbiter) with roles of increasing responsibilities. He is presently the “Experiment Manager” of Metis, i.e. he is the responsible of the instrument realization, and has been responsible of the Italian contribution to the OSIRIS instrument on board of the Rosetta mission.
GN has also designed and realized novel instrumentation for ground astronomy, in particular ultrafast photon counter photometers; this activity has culminated with the realization of Aqueye and Iqueye instruments, for the Asiago cima Ekar telescope and NTT (Chile).
GN has also worked on the development and realization of instrumentation for synchrotron radiation applications: he has patented an innovative optical design which has been applied to three Italian synchrotron radiation beamlines, and then internationally used by Zeiss.
In 2011 his experience in space instrumentation has been recognized also by NASA that named him as member of a panel review for a NASA mission selection.
Since 2017 he is member of the International Academy of Astronautics.
