EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
- Michele Modesti was born in Cervarese S. Croce (PD) on January 18, 1959; He achieved a master degree in Chemical Engineering on 25 July 1984, with 110/110 “summa cum laude” at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Padova, Italy.
- In September 1989, he achieved PhD in Chemical Engineering, with a final thesis entitled: “Fire behaviour of polymeric materials”.
- From February 1989 to May 1991, he worked at the Research Centre at the European Vinyls Corporation in Porto Marghera (Venice), taking part in research work concerning PVC production processes by suspension polymerisation of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM).
- In May 1991, he became Researcher (Assistant Professors) at the Department of Chemical Processes Engineering at University of Padova. His scientific aggregation field is ING-IND/27 (Industrial and Technological Chemistry).
- In June 2006, he become Associate Professor in Industrial and technological chemistry (SSD ING-IND27);
- Since 1st December 2015 he has become Full Professor in Industrial and technological chemistry (SSD ING-IND27) at the Engineering School of Padova University, where he teaches courses on:
- Chemical Industrial Processes 2° (12 CFU);
- Processing and Recycling of Polymeric Materials (6 CFU);
-Since 1994 he is the director of the Polymer Engineering Labs, where several projects are on behalf of a third party.
On December, 1995, he was elected in the Council of the AIDIC (Chemical Engineering Italian Society -Veneto section) Council; he is member of the AIM (Italian Macromolecules Society), ATI (Italian Thermotecnic Society), PPS(Polymer Processing Society) and AIChE. He was appointed as National secretary of GRICU (Society of Academic Chemical Engineering) for the two-years period 2005-2006 and he is delegate of Padova section-
- In the summer 2002 he was Visiting Professor at the Chemical Engineering Department at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) where he began a collaboration with Prof. Y. Cohen.
- In A.Y. 2005/06 he was a Director of an Inter-faculty Master titled “Chemistry and technology of macromolecular materials”;
- For the two-years period 2005-06 he was Secretary of the GRICU (Gruppo Ingegneria Chimica Universitari) and he was the delegate for the Padova section.
- In 2007 he was elected Vice-President of SPE Italy (Society of Plastics Engineers), until 2011.
- In 2008/09 he was a Director of an Inter-faculty Master titled “Chemistry and technology of macromolecular materials” funded by FSE, (POR 2007-2013 Obiettivo “Competitività Regionale e Occupazione” – Asse “Capitale Umano”. DGR 1017 del 06/05/2008).
- He is a member of the Scientific Commitee of the Centre for Mechanics of Biological Materials (CMBM) in the periods 2010-11, 2012-13, 2014-15.
- In May, 2012 he was elected President of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE-Italia) for the periods 2012-2013 e 2014-15.
Dr. Modesti is author of more than 250 works, including publications and conferences communications (about a half on international scientific journals with referees). In particular, he is author of 5 international patents, 11 chapters on books, 1 review chapter on Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, more than 80 papers on scientific international journals and more than 170 conferences proceedings.

Research Area

The scientific activity of Prof. Michele Modesti:
(a) Chemical recycling via glycolysis and acidolysis of thermoset polymers;
(b) Thermal degradation and fire reaction of "halogen free" flame retarded polymeric systems;
(c) Thermal insulating cellular polymers: search for alternative expanders to CFCs and HCFCs with low
environmental impact and polyols from renewable sources;
(d) Preparation and characterization of polymer matrix nanocomposite materials;.
(e) Synthesis of polymeric membranes for micro- and nanofiltration processes.
(f) Synthesis of nanostructured photo catalytic membranes (based on nanofibers via electrospinning) for VOC abatement and filtration;
(g) Use of electrospinning technology for electrospinning of biopolymers for use in the biomedical sector;
(h) Polymers from renewable sources for use in food packaging.
