Prof. Valerio Matozzo received the degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Padova (Italy) in 1998. In 2000, he received a European Union postgraduate research grant. In 2002, he was Invited Lecturer in the Advanced Study Course on “Ecohydrology & Coastal Management: from Catchment to Coastal Areas”, in the framework of UNESCO IHP-VI (International Hydrologic Programme) and UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme), held in the University of Algarve (Portugal), in the period 23-30 September 2002. In that course, he was responsible for theoretical classes entitled “Use of immunological methods for condition assessment” and practical classes entitled “Immunological indices determinations”. In 2003, he received the PhD degree in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Padova. From 2003 to 2005, he had a postdoctoral position at the University of Padova. In 2004, he won the “S. Geraci” Award announced by the Italian Association of Marine Biology for the best paper written by a young researcher and published in an international journal. In 2014, he was awarded the Certificate of Excellence in Reviewing (“in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the quality of the journal) by Elsevier and the journal Marine Environmental Research. From 2006 to 2017, he was a Researcher at the University of Padova. At present, he has a permanent position as Associate Professor at the University of Padova, where he teaches Ecology (degree in Biological Sciences) and Applied Ecology (degree in Environmental Sciences and Technologies). In 2022, he was included in Stanford University's list of the World's Top 2% Scientists in 2022, announced on October 10, 2022 (https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/4).
At present, he oversees the Laboratory of Ecophysiology and Ecotoxicology of Marine Invertebrates at the Department of Biology, University of Padova. His main scientific interest is related to the use of marine invertebrates as bioindicators. Both laboratory and field studies are performed, and particular attention is given to the evaluation of immunotoxic effects of pollutants in sentinel species.
Prof. Matozzo participated in several national and international research projects. He was also invited reviewer for both national and international research proposal.
Until 2024, Prof. Matozzo is author/coauthor of 121 peer-reviewed articles published in peer-reviewed journals.
Prof. Matozzo is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Xenobiotics, Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, Journal of Toxicology and ISJ-Invertebrate Survival Journal. In addition, he is also Associate Editor of Frontiers in Physiology (Aquatic Physiology section) and is Editor-in-Chief of the section “Ecotoxicology” of Journal of Xenobiotics.
He is a Member of the Italian Association of Marine Biology and the Italian Association of Developmental and Comparative Immunobiology.
He serves as a Reviewer for more than 40 international scientific journals.

Research Area

The research activity is focused on the following topics:
- morpho-functional characterization of hemocytes from marine invertebrates (in particular bivalves, crustaceans and sipunculids);
- in vitro and in vivo studies of the effects of emerging environmental contaminants (e.g. drugs and personal care products, nanoparticles, herbicides) in marine invertebrates;
- measurement of different biomarkers in bivalve molluscs and crustaceans for the biomonitoring of coastal marine environments;
- study of immunomodulation phenomena induced by different types of stressors (bacteria, anoxia, mechanical stress, temperature, salinity, pH, fasting) in bivalves and crustaceans.
