I am presently full professor in experimental physics at the Physics and Astronomy Department of the University of Padova, Italy. My academic career has always been linked with an intense scientific activity, always performed at international levels and in leading laboratories in the field of magnetic confinement fusion. I have a broad and high-profile experience in science management, achieved by coordinating many large international research groups and projects and a deep knowledge of the European fusion funding schemes. I have been directly involved in several strategic exercises both in Europe and in the US and I served as a reviewer of grant and project proposals for international institutions.
Since July 2017 I am one of the four members of the Executive Board of the Divertor Tokamak Test facility, a large laboratory whose mission is the construction and operation of the DTT tokamak, a new 0.5 billion euros magnetic fusion device.
From 2014 to 2016 I was the first leader of the new EUROfusion Medium Size Tokamak (MST) task force. EUROfusion is the ‘European Consortium for the Development of Fusion Energy’ and manages and funds European fusion research activities on behalf of Euratom.
Within EUROfusion the MST task force is responsible for the EUROfusion experimental programme in three devices: ASDEX-Upgrade at Max-Planck Institut fuer Plasma Physik in Garching, Germany, MAST-Upgrade at the Culham Center for Fusion Energy in Culham, UK and TCV at the Swiss Plasma Centre/EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. As first leader of the task force I was in charge of setting it up, together with my fellow deputy TFLs and the EUROfusion program management unit. I managed the task force activities which were performed by a team composed of more than 350 scientists (experimentalist and modellers) who participate to the task force scientific program and to the experimental campaigns.
During my career I held other high-level management positions in international science projects and international organizations, including the positions of scientific director of the RFX-mod fusion experiment, which is the largest Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) in the world, of chair of the International Energy Agency RFP implementing agreement, of chair of the ITER ITPA MHD, Disruptions & Control Topical Group, of task force leader for the ASDEX-Upgrade device.
In 2011 I have been elected as Fellow of the American Physical Society, a “distinct honor signifying recognition by one's professional peers” granted for “exceptional contributions to the physics enterprise”.
I have given 45 invited talks at all the major international fusion conferences, numerous talks in all the main universities and laboratories involved in my field. I am author and co-author of 130 papers in international journals. I am also active in science popularization, having written three books for large Italian publishers, being invited to many science festivals and public events, and having participated to artistic shows on science.
