SALVATORE GASPA (1975) graduated in Ancient Near Eastern History at the University of Padua in 2002. He holds two PhDs, one in Semitics, obtained at the University of Florence in 2007, and one in Ancient Near Eastern Studies, achieved at the University of Naples “L’Orientale” in 2011.
- In 2003-2004 he worked as a researcher at the Institute for Asian and African Studies (Department of Assyriology) of the University of Helsinki for research on the Neo-Assyrian texts with the support of two Finnish Government Fellowships.
- In 2006-2012, as "Cultore della materia" and short-term contract researcher, he worked in the framework of research activities for the Chair of Ancient Near Eastern History under the guidance of Prof. G.B. Lanfranchi.
- In the years 2009-2010 and 2013-2014 he collaborated with the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa for the project "Mnamon. Ancient Writing Systems of the Mediterranean” (sections of cuneiform writing), directed by professors C. Ampolo and A. Santoni.
- In 2013-2015 he was Marie Curie Intra-European Fellow and Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen in the framework of the European Commission's Research Programme “7th Framework Programme of the European Union-People-Call 2012” and in the joined programmes of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - Archéologies et Sciences de l’Antiquité, Maison de l’Archéologie et de l’Ethnologie “René Ginouvès”, Nanterre, and of the Danish National Research Foundation’s Centre for Textile Research, University of Copenhagen.
- At the University of Copenhagen and other Danish institutions (National Museum of Denmark) he also gave courses and organized seminars and international conferences. He promoted the Marie Curie Fellowship (IEF/IF) European Programme at the University of Copenhagen and the Danish Ministry of Education and Research. In the same university, he also worked as a supervisor in the management of mobility experiences of international students.
- In 2014 he was awarded the Italian National Scientific Qualification for the Associate Professorship, in 2021 for the Full Professorship.
- In 2015 he was awarded a research grant from the Carlsberg Foundation (Carlsbergfondet, Denmark) for a project on the use of textiles in ancient Near Eastern rituals, based at the University of Copenhagen and framed in the international research programme “Ancient Textiles from the Orient to the Mediterranean–Groupe de Recherche International, 2015-2018” (ATOM-GDRI), directed by the CNRS (UMR 7041, Nanterre) in collaboration with the universities of Copenhagen and Leicester.
- In 2018-2019 he was grant-holder of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung at the Ruprecht-Karls Universität Heidelberg, Dept. of Assyriology.
- 2014-19: Visiting Researcher at Collège de France, Paris; Histoire et Archéologie de l’Orient Cunéiforme (CNRS Unit), Nanterre; British Museum, London; Freie Universität, Berlin; Universität Innsbruck; Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, Universität Hamburg.
- He is member of the International Association for Assyriology, of the Marie Curie Alumni Association, of the Network Alumni of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and of the Associazione Italiana Alexander von Humboldt.
- From 2015 to 2019 he was adjunct professor ("Professore a contratto") at the DiSSGeA.
- From 2019 to 2024 he worked as an A-level and B-level researcher at the DiSSGeA.
- From 2024 is Associate Professor at the DiSSGeA.

ALTERNATIVE STUDY PROGRAMMES FOR WORKING STUDENTS:
Working students who wish to arrange an alternative study programme are requested to contact me as soon as possible. All students, both those attending and those who are not, are invited to register on Moodle in order to have access to the teaching materials for the individual lessons (slides summarising the topics covered in the lessons, supplementary readings, handouts, selected passages from cuneiform and biblical texts, web resources on Mesopotamian civilisation and other useful aids for understanding the topics covered and preparing for the exams). In Moodle, students will also be able to access guidelines for the preparation of term papers for History of the Ancient Near East. In addition, regular consultation of Moodle is useful for keeping up-to-date with all course-related training initiatives.
HISTORY OF THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST TERM PAPERS:
All information on the preparation of History of the Ancient Near East term papers is available on the Moodle platform. Students who have prepared their History of the Ancient Near East term paper while attending the course are reminded that the deadline for delivery is towards the end of the course and in any case no later than the opening of the summer examination session.
EXAMINATIONS:
Examinations are held in presence only.
