Sara Faggion obtained her Bachelor's degree in Animal Science and Technology in 2011 and her Master's degree in Marine Biology in 2014. In 2019, she earned a PhD in Animal Science from the University of Padova. Between 2017 and 2018, she was a visiting researcher at the Institut Français de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la Mer (IFREMER). In 2019, following the completion of her PhD, she spent a year at the same research institute (IFREMER) as a postdoctoral researcher.
From 2020 to 2021, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Comparative Biomedicine and Food Science at the University of Padua. In 2022, she became a Type A Research Fellow (RtdA), and in 2024, a Tenure-Track Researcher (RTT) at the same department.
She has participated in several training courses on selective breeding and genetic selection in animal species at the University of Padova and in France, as well as on experimental trials for disease resistance assessment (challenge tests) in aquaculture species at the Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU).
During her research career, she has been a speaker at national and international conferences and an invited speaker at international workshops. She is the first author of several scientific papers published in peer-reviewed international journals.

Research Area
The research activity of Sara Faggion involves the study of the genetic and genomic variability of important traits for breeding purposes of farmed fish and swine. In particular:
- study of nodavirus resistance in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and investigation of physiological and immunological parameters to be used as indirect traits for disease resistance;
- study of nodavirus resistance in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata);
- study of boar taint compounds in intact male pigs and relationships between boar taint compounds and sexual behaviours;
- investigation of the potential and effectiveness of genomic tools in predicting the phenotype or pseudo-phenotypes using Bayesian methods or machine learning algorithms.
She was also involved in conservation and evolutionary genetics projects:
- study of the genetic architecture and population-specific evolution of the polygenic sex determination system of European sea bass in different environments;
- investigation of early sex-related growth trajectories using a combination of image analysis and a brand-new RFID technologies to tag 0.1 gr European sea bass larvae;
- genomically-assisted reconstruction of the ancestral sea bass Mediterranean lineage using local ancestry deconvolution and simulations of generations of selection.
