Currently, i serve as Assistant Professor of Human Anatomy at the Institute of Human Anatomy, Department of Neuroscience of the University of Padova, where i have previously obtained my degree and doctoral degree (PhD) and completed my post-graduate training in neuropathology and clinical neuroanatomy. I have also undergone post-doctoral training in forensic neuropathology.
My research activity focuses on the discovery and validation of central and peripheral neuropathological biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson's Disease. Other research interests include clinical neuroanatomy of the human brainstem, nervous control of respiratory centers, infectious and inflammatory pathology of the brain and its relationship with neurodegeneration.
In the last 5 years i have published 40+ peer-reviewed articles in international journals in the field of neuroscience, neuropathology and human anatomy and presented my research activity as a speaker at over 60 national and international conferences. I serve as ad-hoc reviewer for several high-impact scientific journals (Nature NPJ Parkinson's Disease, Movement Disorders, Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, Neurobiology of Disease). I have co-authored 4 academic textbooks for students and specialists on neuroanatomy and microscopic anatomy.
I am a member of several national and international scientific organizations, including the Royal College of Pathologists, the European Confederation of Neuropathological Societies, and the italian group for neuromorphology.

Thesis proposals

Students requesting internship and thesis must have a solid knowledge of human neuroanatomy, histology and neurology. A good foundation of general pathology and neuropathology is also reccommendend, but will be included in the internship/thesis training plan.

Literature Review Thesis:
Clinical anatomy of the basal ganglia
Classification of proteinopathies
Neuropathology of synucleinopathies
Gut-brain axis in neurodegenerative diseases
Central and peripheral biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases
Anatomical bases of neurological vulnerability

Experimental Thesis:
Characterization of histopatological biomarkers for synucleinopathies through gastro-intestinal biopsies
Characterization of histopatological biomarkers for synucleinopathies through skin biopsies
Expression and topography of monomeric, phosphorilated and aggregated alpha-synuclein in the human brain (normal and pathological)
Morpho-functional characterization of neurosurgical targets for deep brain stimulation (DBS)
Characterization of microglial phenotypes in the central nervous system of normal subjects and in patients with neurodegenerative diseases
