I graduated in Economics at the University of Venice in 1992. After a period of work in French and Italian industrial and consulting firms (1990-99), I switched to the Academic career, taking a Ph.D. in Economic History at the University of Verona (IT), and a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Economic History at the University of Padua, IT (1999-2005).

Afterwards I worked at the Universities of Padua (Economic History), of Hertfordshire, UK (Economic History), at the Kazakh National University “Al’ Farabi” of Almaty, KZ (Macroeconomic within the EU SilkRoad Program), at the New Europe College, Bucharest, RO (Economic History), at the University of Wuhan, PRC (Economic Development), and at the Ural Federal University, Russian Federation (Economic Development).

I hold the qualification of “Maître de Conférence” and of Associated Professor in Economic History (Professore Associato) for the French and Italian universities.

My research interests have focused on the processes determining economic development and economic divergences and convergences on regional and global scale.

Particular attention has been devoted to industrialization processes, transition from agriculture to industry, role of infrastructures (ports and arsenals) in regional development, models of economic development, food production and distribution. In this context I have tackled such issues as the role of pluri – activity in local development, the causes and long term consequences of the social and national division of labour, the paths of emergence of agro – industrial sectors (e.g. hemp and flax) in European economies, the role of institution, technological transfer and labour organization in promoting economic growth, the coexistence in time and space of different path of development, the potentialities of local sustainable development, green and blue economy models in the current globalised economy. I have also analysed the relevance of cultural transfers for moulding the modernity we are living in, taking Eastern Mediterranean as a case study for highlighting contiguities and interactions between economic and cultural spheres.


Along with research activities, since 2005 I have been teaching Economic History of Developing Countries, Local Development, Global History of Food and Economic History of Food, Territory and Local Development, Development Models in Historical Perspective at the University of Padua. I have taught Sustainable Development and Green Economy at the University KazNU “Al’ Farabi” of Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Economic Development Models at the Bukhara State University (Uzbekistan), Sustainable Economic Development at the Wuhan University (P.R. of China).

Research Area

Thesis proposals

I accept theses proposal on the following topics:
1. Economic development issues both at local, regional, national and global level both in Europe as in Africa, Eurasia and the Americas.
2. Economic relations between Europe and the Eurasian space, including the Russian Federation and PRC, in a diachronic perspective
3. Industrial districts in Italy, Europe and Eurasia
4. AgriFood industry in an historical and diachronic perspective between different world regions
