Research Area

My research focuses on topics as the transition from agriculture to industry; the impact of public intervention on regional development; trade and international exchanges; local economic development, urban development, and industrial districts; management of industrial heritage. In recent years, also exploiting international scientific networks, he deepened historical roots and current prospects of economic exchanges between Italy and the Eurasian area, including China.

In this context I have tackled such issues as the role of pluri – activity in local development, the causes and long term consequences of the social and national division of labour, the paths of emergence of agro – industrial sectors (e.g. hemp and flax) in European economies, the role of institution, technological transfer and labour organization in promoting economic growth, the coexistence in time and space of different path of development, the potentialities of local sustainable development, green and blue economy models in the current globalised economy. I have also analysed the relevance of cultural transfers for moulding the modernity we are living in, taking Eastern Mediterranean as a case study for highlighting contiguities and interactions between economic and cultural spheres. At the moment I study ongoing transformations of mono-functional towns in Italy and Russia within a comparative and diachronic approach with a focus on the re-use of industrial heritage, and of the economic relation between Italy and the Soviet Union in the period between the two World Wars.

My researches have been realised using a broad range of multi – lingual sources. In this context fluency in five European languages, including Russian, and my ability to read Dutch and Spanish, are important assets that have enabled me to exploit wide range of sources, build scientific dialog with foreign scholars, and foster networks at international level.

Thesis proposals

I accept theses proposal on the following topics:
1. Economic development issues both at local, regional, national and global level both in Europe as in Africa, Eurasia and the Americas.
2. Economic relations between Europe and the Eurasian space, including the Russian Federation and PRC, in a diachronic perspective
3. Industrial districts in Italy, Europe and Eurasia
4. AgriFood industry in an historical and diachronic perspective between different world regions
