Daniela Basso, full professor at the Department of Medicine – DIMED of the University of Padova, Chief of the Laboratory Medicine Unit since 2021, University Hospital of Padova. Graduated in Medicine and Surgery (1984, University of Padova. Summa cum laude), got the “Gastroenterology and Endoscopy” (1988, School of Medicine, Padova) and the “Clinical Pathology” Fellowships (1995, School of Medicine, Padova) with Full Marks and Honors. She was authorized to practice Medicine in Italy (State board examination) in 1984. She trained at the Centre de Recherches sur les Glandes Exocrines (Marseilles - France) directed by C. Figarella in 1987 performing studies on trypsinogen 1 autoactivation.
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE: Daniela Basso gained clinical experience in gastroenterology, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (Department of Gastroenterology, University-Hospital of Padova, internship 1985-1990), and laboratory medicine (Department of Laboratory, University-Hospital, Padova internship, 1991-1992; Department of Laboratory, Colli’s Hospital (USL 21) Assistant, 1993-1995; Department of Laboratory Medicine, University-Hospital, Padova Assistant, 1996-2016; Department of Medicine – DIMED, University of Padova Associate professor, from 1/10/2016 to date). She successfully established and got the position of person-in-charge 2006-2021 of the Clinical Molecular Biology Section at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, University-Hospital, Padova, that actually provides molecular diagnosis of cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, haemochromatosis, thrombophilia, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, myeloproliferative disorders, predisposition to adverse drug reactions (pharmacogenetics) fulfilling the requirements of ISO 15189 Accreditation system.
RESEARCH ACTIVITY: Her studies are mainly focused on: 1) tumor – microenvironment interactions with a special focus on cellular immune response and diabetes mellitus in pancreatic cancer; 2) biochemical and genetic studies with a special focus on autoimmunity in celiac disease; 3) H. pylori – host interactions with a special focus on H. pylori virulence factors and host genetics as driving forces in gastric carcinogenesis; 4) identification and validation of disease biomarkers. in the fields of cancer, autoimmunity and cardiovascular diseases.
On these topics, she has been involved in national and international projects.
She has a record of successful and productive research (317 articles in international peer-reviewed journals; H-index 41 from Scopus). Daniela Basso is an active fellow/member of the: 1) Associazione Italiana Studio Pancreas (AISP) (Adviser from 2002 to 2005), 2) Società Italiana di Biochimica Clinica e Biologia Molecolare Clinica (SIBIOC), 3) European Pancreatic Club (member of the Abstract Selection Commitee from 2009 to 2011 and Council member from 2012 to 2015).
