Cristina Ballarin graduated in Biological Sciences in 1990 at the University of Padova. In 1994, she got her Ph.D. title after a dissertation on "Ionic channels in mitochondrial membranes: An electrophysiological and biochemical study." From 1996 to 2001, she had a post-doctoral research fellowship and studied the cellular biology of the prion protein.
From 2001 to 2022, she was a research assistant in Veterinary Anatomy at the Department of Comparative Biomedicine and Food Science, University of Padua.
From 29-12-2022, she is an Associate Professor of Veterinary Anatomy at the same Department.
She has studied the neuroendocrine control of the developing hypothalamus in mammals. Furthermore, she investigated many features of the functional anatomy of marine mammals. Her recent studies focus on detecting factors involved in fish stress response and growth, by histological and immune-histochemical analysis of tissues from aquaculture species. She also studies the impact of nutritional supplement intake on the gut response, in broiler chickens and fish.
Since 2001, she has taught Veterinary Anatomy in many courses at the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, University of Padova. Since 2017, she has taught Comparative Animal Anatomy in the Bachelor's degree in Animal Care at the University of Padova.
Prof. Ballarin is a member of the Teaching Board of the Doctoral School in Veterinary Sciences.
Over the years she held institutional positions in the academic field. She is currently a member of the following Commissions:

- Department representative in the Commissione Orientamento for the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine
- VQR Working Group of the Department of Comparative Biomedicine and Food Science
- Member of the Accreditation and Evaluation Group (GAV) for the “Animal Care” course of studies
