Gianluigi Baldo (born 10/03/60 in Portogruaro, VE), is Full Professor of Latin Literature and Head of the Department of Historical Sciences, Geography, and the Ancient World, University of Padua. He is a member of the "PhD School in Linguistic, Philology and Literature" - University of Padua, of the Accademia Properziana del Subasio, of the Accademia Galileiana, and of the Centro di studi GRAL (Greco Arabo Latino) Incontro di culture. He is the editor of the Marsilio Series of Classical Texts “Il Convivio”.
He has concentrated on Augustan poetry, Ciceronian oratory, and historiography of imperial period. He has studied the relationship between Ovid and Vergilian epic, parodic intertextuality, and the reception of classics; he has published the books Dall'Eneide alle Metamorfosi. Il codice epico di Ovidio, Padova, Imprimitur, 1995; Eros e storia. Orazio, Carm. I 1-20 e II 1-20, Verona 2009 and a lot of articles in Journals; he has given papers at international conferences on Augustan Poetry. He has contributed to the commentary on Ovid's Ars amatoria (Fondazione Valla/Mondadori 1991); he is the author of a commentary on Vergil's Aeneid (Venezia, Marsilio, 1998, 2004 II ed., introd. by G. B. Conte, transl. by M. Ramous). He is currently working on an edition with commentary of Horace's Odes I-II (E. Pianezzola ed., comm. by G. Baldo-A. Duso, critical text by L. Nosarti [Fondazione Valla]).
In the field of Ciceronian studies, he has published a critical edition (with translation and commentary) of Cicero, Verr. II 4 (Florence, Le Monnier, "Biblioteca nazionale. Serie dei classici greci e latini", 2004), and has given papers at international conferences, including a paper for the "Collegio dei diritti antichi" , Istituto Universitario di Studi Superiori - University of Pavia (published in B. Santalucia, La repressione criminale nella Roma repubblicana fra norma e persuasione, Pavia, Iuss Press, 2009, pp. 285-315).
He has contributed to the complete commentary with text and translation on Tacitus'Works (Renato Oniga ed., Torino, Einaudi ["Biblioteca della Pléiade"], 2003). As part of a “Progetto di Eccellenza” financed by the Cariparo Foundation, he directed the first modern edition of Realdo Colombo's De re anatomica (1559) published in 2014 for the "Sciences et Savoirs" series by the Parisian publisher "Les Belles Lettres". He is editor (with E. Cazzuffi) of a book about landscape and latin literature (Regionis forma pulcherrima: percezioni, lessico, categorie del paesaggio nella letteratura latina, Firenze, Olschki [“Biblioteca dell’Archivum Romanicum. Serie 1 – Storia. Letteratura, Paleografia”], 2013).
In 2014 he founded the "Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerca 'Studi Liviani' " - University of Padua, that has organized two international conferences on Livy (2015 and 2017), with the presence of Italian and foreign scholars. He is the scientific director of a research project funded by the University of Padua ("Tradition and exegesis of the third decade of Livy"), which includes a commentary on Livy’s XXI book (first step of a complete commentary on the third decade).
