Since March 2024, Matteo Ardit is Associate Professor of Mineralogy (SSD GEOS-01/A; GSD 04/GEOS-01) at the Department of Geosciences (University of Padova). In 2024, he obtained the National Scientific Habilitation (ASN) as Full Professor (GSD 04/GEOS-01; Mineralogy, Petrology, Geochemistry, Volcanology, Georesources and Applications). From March 2022 to March 2024 he is Associate Professor of Mineralogy (SSD GEO/06) at the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences (University of Ferrara), where he teaches the courses "Minerali critici per la sostenibilità e le rinnovabili" and "Mineralogia applicata ai materiali ceramici". From 2019 to 2022 he is Assistant Professor RTD/b). From 2012 to 2018 he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Ferrara. He was a visiting researcher at the Department of Mineralogy of the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Stockholm, Sweden) in 2018, at the Clay Mineral Research Lab of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (Indiana University, Bloomington USA) in 2017, and at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (Stuttgart, Germany) in 2011. From 2009 to 2012 he did his PhD in Mineralogy and Crystallography at the University of Ferrara. In the 2007-2008 he was research assistant at the Department of Earth Sciences (University of Ferrara). In 2006 he was scientific assistant at the Mineralogical Museum of the University of Padova. He graduated in Geological Sciences at the University of Padova in 2005.

Since 2008 he has been advisor and co-advisor of 24 students (BSc, MSc, PhD).

Matteo Ardit has been awarded two Ph.D. thesis prizes and, in 2014, he received the "Ugo Panichi" prize awarded by the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrology for the significant scientific contributions in the field of the mineralogical sciences.

Advisor to the Presidential Council of the Società Italiana di Mineralogia e Petrografia (SIMP; 2024-2026)
Member of the Executive Board of the Gruppo Nazionale di Mineralogia (GNM; 2022-2027)

Research Area

Research activities span several scientific disciplines, including mineralogy, crystal chemistry, mineral physics, and crystallography. The goal of this research is to understand the structural properties of minerals and synthetic analogues in order to provide the basis for designing materials with enhanced properties and to understand structural dynamics under different chemical and physical conditions.

This research activity uses different investigation techniques through experiments performed both in conventional laboratories and in facilities with non-conventional sources, under ambient and non-ambient conditions. In terms of project activity, Matteo Ardit is involved in 10 research proposals funded at "large scale facilities" (ESRF and Elettra) and participates in 13 nationally funded research projects.
