Erasmus+ agreements with non-European institutions (KA171)
Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility – KA171
Action KA171 of the Erasmus+ Programme enables universities to establish partnerships with institutions in partner countries across other continents, fostering both incoming and outgoing mobility for students, doctoral candidates, academic and administrative staff. Its dual objective is to strengthen the international attractiveness and competitiveness of European higher education institutions while also expanding the range of mobility opportunities available to their students and staff.
The agreements may provide for the following types of activities:
- Study: student mobility for study activities (courses with exams), and possibly dissertation. Duration of mobility: minimum 3 – maximum 12 months.
- traineeship: student mobility for traineeship activities abroad in a company or other relevant workplace. Duration of mobility: minimum 2 – maximum 12 months.
- course unit (Staff Mobility for Teaching): teaching activities of teachers. Duration of mobility: minimum 5 days (travel included) – maximum 2 months (minimum 8h/week of teaching)
- training (Staff Mobility for Training): professional development activities aimed at lecturers and technical-administrative staff of higher education institutions (HEIs). It can take the form of training events abroad (excluding conferences) and job shadowing/observation/training periods at a partner university. Duration of mobility: minimum 5 days (including travel) – maximum 2 months.
From 24 to 36 months. The start of mobility is normally set for 1 August.
As part of Action KA171, it is possible to propose agreements with institutions in non-EU countries, with the exception of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Turkey, Serbia and countries belonging to regions 5 and 12
The conclusion of an Erasmus+ KA171 agreement involves the following steps:
- Internal selection: the Projects and Mobility Office, in agreement with the regional Advisors and in line with the University's internationalization strategies, selects the international partners to be presented for the application.
- Selection by the Erasmus+ National Agency INDIRE: on the basis of the selected applications, the Projects and Mobility Office draws up the University application. For Erasmus+ KA171 actions, there are limitations to outgoing student mobility to certain countries (see Table 2 at the bottom of the page). The University's application is then sent to the Erasmus+ National Agency INDIRE for final evaluation. Only projects that pass the latter selection can receive funding and proceed with the activation of the inter-institutional agreement and related mobility.
- The National Agency usually communicates the results of the selection around the month of August.
- The Projects and Mobility Office is responsible for drafting inter-institutional agreements with the selected partners. Planned mobilities can only start once the agreements have been signed by both parties.
