Europass digital credentials are made up of three different parts:

1) Image: this is the typical visual representation of your credential, which generally includes the minimum information about the credential: your name, the title of the credential and any other information chosen by whoever created the credential;

2) Authentication and verification checks: these checks provide you with information about the validity and reliability of the technical format of the credential and its authenticity. They also give you information about:

  • Who applied the seal to the credential (e.g. the University that awarded you the credential);
  • Whether it is linked to a valid accreditation (accreditation is an additional form of quality assurance that formal learning institutions may refer to if they wish. In any case, credentials remain valid without accreditation).
  • Whether someone has tampered with the credential, for example by changing the contents of the file. In this case, the seal would no longer be valid and the verification checks would fail, so that anyone viewing the credential would realise that the contents of the credential are no longer reliable.

3) Content: the content of the credential is shown in sections representing who holds the credential and information about who issued it, data on results, learning activities, assessments or the criteria for which the credential was awarded.

On the left-hand side of the EDC Viewer, you will find clickable links to access and navigate between these three groups of information. There, you can see the entire content of the credential in addition to your personal data (your name will appear); it may include descriptions of the course you completed, your grades, the learning outcomes, or any other information that the organisation that issued the credential has documented in the credential. This additional information allows you to show the details of your studies to potential employers or third parties, who may in turn verify your knowledge and skills.
