What is Blended Learning?

Blended learning integrates in-person teaching with online teaching. Its purpose is to make the teaching and learning experience more flexible, efficient and effective by using the best of both methodologies.

Online lessons may consist of synchronous activities (the lecturer and the class meet to carry out the lesson in a virtual environment) or asynchronous activities (given a task, the class works individually or in groups, with complete autonomy and at a different time from the usual lesson timetable).

The in-person component, previously designed in integration with the online one, must be enhanced through active learning methods that encourage discussion, interaction between lecturers/students and students/students, and are useful for connecting with the online activities. The active involvement of students, both in person and online, is the most important factor to consider in order to foster autonomy and participation in learning.

Below you can find effective self-study resources for designing individual lessons or entire face-to-face, blended and online courses

Smart Learning Design in 10 Steps

The short handbook reworked by Carlo Mariconda, based on the MOOC created and developed by Susanna Sancassani, aims to facilitate the understanding of the transformative processes of teaching in higher education according to the smart learning design model.

The model refers to an intelligent integration of technologies into teaching in order to improve the quality of teaching and make students' learning experiences engaging and meaningful in terms of better understanding of concepts, greater in-depth exploration of content and better critical re-elaboration of it.

MOOC T4L - Teaching Blended and Online 2026 (with Unipd SSO)

The training pathway offers concrete ideas and operational tools for the blended or online design of one or more lessons, making full use of the potential of Moodle, the technologies available at Unipd and generative artificial intelligence.

The training pathway lasts 30 hours and, upon completion, a T4L Openbadge will be issued.

Smart Learning Design CHATBOT

The Chatbot is intended as support for the design of face-to-face, blended or online courses using the Smart Learning Design model and in accordance with the Unipd guidelines on blended and online teaching and Ministerial Decree 1835 of 6/12/2024. Digital Education Hub ALMA

This assistant uses OpenAI's ChatGPT technology (Lucrez-IA does not currently allow the creation of Chatbots).
The University of Padua has no active contract with the service provider and cannot guarantee the confidentiality or protection of the data entered; therefore, users are free to use the chatbot with their own ChatGPT account, according to the terms and limits of the plan in use (free, Plus, Team, Enterprise, etc.).

We recommend that you: do not enter personal or sensitive data, your own or others' (e.g. students' names, codes, confidential information); use the chatbot only for teaching or general informational purposes; consult and configure the privacy and data processing settings of your ChatGPT account. The responses generated do not replace human judgement and may contain errors or inaccuracies.

Technologies for Teaching (restricted access only with an @Unipd email and to the content via SSO)

With the valuable contribution of the Digital Learning& Multimedia Office, a collection of presentation videos and tutorials on technologies for teaching is available to support the design and implementation of a Blended Course.
