Quantum Computing Lab
Il Quantum Computing Lab, in via Luzzati a Padua, houses spaces designed for activities involving trapped-ion quantum computing, physics of the Universe, lasers and optics, and other laboratories.

The laboratory hosts the development of a trapped-ion quantum computer, that is, a platform in which quantum information is ‘written’ and manipulated using ions (electrically charged atoms) kept suspended and confined by means of electromagnetic fields inside a trap. The ions are then controlled with extreme precision using pulses, in particular laser pulses, which make it possible to prepare, evolve and read quantum states. This technology is considered one of the most promising for creating stable and controllable quantum processors, suitable for exploring new applications in the simulation of complex systems, optimisation and the development of quantum algorithms.
The building extends over 683.0 m² of gross covered floor area, distributed between the ground floor (laboratories, 565.4 m²) and the first floor (technical rooms, 117.6 m²). The net areas dedicated to the laboratories reach 386.9 m², organised into specialist areas:
- Quantum Computer Laboratory: 104.1 m², with a dedicated control room (34.1 m²);
- Physics of the Universe Laboratory: two rooms of 77.9 m² and 15.1 m²;
- Laser Laboratory: 17.0 m²;
- Modular laboratories: 7 rooms ranging from 15.3 m² to 23.0 m².
The facility also includes a 26.8 m² meeting room and dedicated technical rooms (ground floor 12.1 m², roof 100.2 m²).
Particular attention has been paid to the requirements demanded by the most sensitive equipment: an isolated slab with an anti-vibration joint of 213.60 m² is planned, specifically designed to guarantee the operating conditions of the quantum computer.
From an energy and plant engineering perspective, the facility incorporates a 30 kW photovoltaic system (62 panels) and a geothermal system dedicated to machine cooling, with 1 abstraction well of 137 m and 2 discharge wells of 137 m (authorised and to be carried out shortly). Advanced plants and systems are also planned: technical gases, electrical distribution with busbars and UPS, oxygen level detection and a safety control system for lasers in operation. Serving the facility is a dedicated MV–LV substation rated at 250 kW.
The new facility incorporates extremely stringent technical requirements, from anti-vibration features to support systems, in order to house cutting-edge instrumentation. It is a laboratory designed for research, but also for teaching: here students can develop advanced technological skills and experience science “in the field”, in close contact with state-of-the-art apparatus and experimental methods.
The initiative forms part of QCSC funded under the WCRI call, which is developing a complete quantum computing ecosystem (hardware, software and their scientific and industrial applications), and exploring the interface between quantum computing and communications, thanks to the participation of twelve Departments of the University of Padua and the Padua QTech Interdepartmental Centre for Quantum Technologies. The activities of the Quantum Computing Lab have also been supported by the National Centre for HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing – Fondazione ICSC, thereby contributing to the coordinated development of the Italian quantum computing ecosystem.
Several other Italian universities are participating in the programme (Pavia, L’Aquila, Napoli and Bologna…) together with a network of high-level bodies and partners, including Cineca, INFN Q@TN,TQT, NEAT, ARAKNE, ALGORITHMS, underlining the strongly interdisciplinary nature and the national and international reach of the initiative, which also led to the foundation of the Italian Quantum Alliance, an association representing institutions and companies active in Italy in quantum technologies, based in Padova.
The strong commitment of the University of Padua to quantum technologies also aims to contribute to the development of the Italian Strategy for Quantum Technologies and the European Quantum Strategy.
