Born in Padova on 4 January 1958.

Graduated in Physics in Padova in 1981, he obtained a PhD in Physics at SISSA in Trieste in 1987. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California Berkeley (1986-1989) and CERN (1989-1990), a scientific staff member at CERN (1990-1996), a senior researcher (1993-1998) and research director (1998-2000) at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), and a full professor at the Sapienza University of Rome (2000-2005). In 2004-2005 and 2014 he spent sabbaticals at CERN. Since 2005 he has been a full professor at the University of Padova.

He has carried out research in the field of theoretical physics, his most important contributions concern the phenomenology of elementary particles and the unified theories of fundamental interactions. He is the author of 167 scientific publications with over 15000 citations and an index-h of 56 (source: Google Scholar). He was divisional associate editor of Physical Review Letters (2002-2008) and since 2003 has been editor of the Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP).

He was a member and then president, in the last two years of his term, of the CERN Scientific Policy Committee (2007-2013) and of the High Energy Particle Physics Board of the European Physical Society (2002-2011). He was a member of the executive board and board of directors of INFN (2015-2019) and of the board of directors of the Galilean School (2013-2019). He was a member (2015-2020) and vice-president (2019-2020) of the European Research Council (ERC). Since 2014 he has chaired the steering committee of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste. He has been a non-resident corresponding member of the Veneto Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts since 2005 and a member of Academia Europaea since 2015.
