The "ex Salsa" complex in Treviso
Thirty years after the start of teaching activities in the city of Treviso, the University formalizes the transition toa stable and functional campus, overcoming the transitional leases that currently see the courses distributed in several city locations, largely in spaces granted or rented by the local health authority.
The Municipality of Treviso will in fact grant the University of Padova a surface right for 50 years on a building of the former "Tommaso Salsa" barracks, in Viale Brigata Marche, intended to host the courses of the School of Law and the first years of the Health Professions . Currently, the Law courses are part of the historic campus of Palazzo San Leonardo, while the courses of the health professions are distributed in three or four different locations. The new campus will therefore allow for significant logistical rationalization.
The complex will be designed to accommodate about 1,800 users and will include classrooms of different capacities, laboratories, study spaces, a conference room, offices for teachers and secretaries, as well as common areas and covered outdoor areas. In particular, there will be large classrooms for the Law course and for the two Nursing channels, medium-capacity classrooms for the Dental Hygiene course (the only one in the University and potentially expandable), and smaller classrooms for the other courses in the health professions. There will also be educational laboratories ("skill labs") for Nursing and Midwifery, as well as an integrated library with a computer laboratory and a separate building for study rooms.
In detail, the main building will house a total of 13 classrooms for a total of 1,679 seats (including a 255-seat divisible lecture hall), while an external building will be dedicated to two study rooms for a further 128 seats, reaching a total capacity of 1,807 seats. Currently, the student population in the Treviso campus is about 2,400 students, divided between Law (740), Health Professions (860) and Medicine and Surgery (406, of which a part in Conegliano). The Medicine and Surgery course will continue to take place at the ULSS health facilities and will not be transferred to the new campus.
The new synergy between the Municipality of Treviso and the University will act as a catalyst for the urban regeneration of the northern area of the city. The plan, in addition to the complete recovery of the former barracks, provides for the construction of a waterway that will run along a new cycle path and will be integrated into the surrounding green area , enriched by an urban cultural forest, with the aim of transforming the entire complex into a center of excellence for the city by combining education, sport and leisure.
The operation, worth a total of over €12 million, is co-financed by the Municipality for €3.3 million from PNRR funds and provides for a maximum investment by the University of €8.97 million for the completion of the renovation, according to a project shared between the two entities. This commitment will allow the reduction of passive rents and an optimization of logistics and library services.
The works will be carried out according to two functional phases: the delivery of the first, guaranteed by the Municipality with PNRR funds, is expected by September 2026; The second is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
