The European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF) are the instruments with which the European Union pursues its policies.

The funds fund projects with the ultimate goal of creating jobs and a healthy and sustainable economy and environment in Europe, focusing on 5 key areas:

  • Research and innovation
  • Digital Technologies
  • Low-carbon economy
  • Sustainable management of natural resources
  • Small Business Support

which in the 2021-2027 programming are divided into 5 objectives:

  • Smart Europe: innovation, digitalisation and support for SMEs;
  • Green Europe: carbon free economy, implementation of the Paris Agreement, renewable energy;
  • Connected Europe: digital networks for strategic transport;
  • Social Europe: social rights, quality of work, education, social inclusion;
  • Citizens' Europe: support for locally managed development strategies and urban  development

More than half of EU funding is channelled through these funds, which are managed jointly by the European Commission and EU countries (shared management). In Italy, part of the funds is centrally managed at ministerial level (PON), while part is allocated to the Regions (ROP, RDP) for specific interventions focused on the territory under their competence.

The Structural Funds and Special Projects Sector of the Research Valorisation Office offers support to professors and researchers for participation in calls funded by regional managing authorities through:

  1. European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)
  2. European Social Fund Plus (ESF+)
  3. European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD)
  4. European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF)
  5. European Territorial Cooperation (ETC), also known as INTERREG.

Information and instructions for participating in calls for proposals and reporting on projects are available in the dedicated Reserved Area, accessible to all SSO holders.
