International research networks and partnerships

The University of Padua participates in international networks and partnerships that bring together stakeholders involved in research areas of strategic interest to EU countries.

Many of these networks are supported by the European Commission, which refers to them for the formulation of its calls for proposals within the Framework Programmes for Research and Innovation.

The University's strategic action with respect to these networks aims

  • to strengthen dialogue between disciplines
  • achieve critical mass in research by fostering collaboration between groups active in different departments, with common interests in a given subject area (each for its own specialisation).

The main European initiatives take the form of: European partnerships, either co-programmed (Co-Programmed EU Partnerships), co-funded (Co-Funded EU Partnerships) or institutionalised (Institutionalised EU Partnerships), based on memoranda of understanding and/or contractual agreements between the European Commission and public partners (national research funding agencies, member state authorities), or private partners (non-profit associations, consisting of academic and industrial stakeholders); European Technology and Innovation Platforms (ETPs), set up on the initiative of the European Commission in 2001 to promote a collaborative approach to research between leading companies, academic stakeholders, local, regional, national and European authorities; European Innovation Partnerships (EIPs), focused on the societal challenges of greatest European importance, to benefit from the joint efforts of all stakeholders with the aim of coordinating investments, adapting policies and increasing the impact of innovative solutions; specific non-profit associations that, in order to address new and ambitious technological development challenges, involve stakeholders from both industry and research.

The Call for Networks - an initiative of the University of Padua to support participation in international partnerships
On an annual basis, the University organises an official internal survey to collect new applications to join international research networks and partnerships.
