Concentus Musicus Patavinus
The Concentus Musicus Patavinus was founded in the late seventies as a university orchestra under the guidance of Professor Antonio Papisca, founder of the Human Rights Center of the University of Padua. Its establishment is part of a broad cultural and value project, aimed at combining music, education, civil commitment and active participation in university life. In 1984, the leadership passed to Professor Giulio Cattin and the Concentus Musicus Patavinus was structured as a center for studies, research and musical training, combining concert commitment with musical production. In addition to choreic-musical representation, Concentus aims to unite people united by shared values and eager to make music together, while spreading the tradition and culture developed within the University.
Thanks to the subdivision into different groups, the Concentus is able to cover a large part of Western musical production, from the so-called "Gregorian chant" to jazz music.
You can join Concentus at any time of the year.
Continuous attendance at rehearsals and laboratories (certified by Teachers) allows students to acquire 3 university credits (ECTS credits).
The meetings between the members of the groups take place on a weekly basis and include, during the academic year, experiences and performative moments in which the results obtained are shared with the public.
The Concentus Musicus Patavinus of the University of Padua resumes its musical activity for the academic year 2025-2026 and invites the entire university and city community to participate in the different components that make up the CMP: chamber choir, medieval singing choir, Gaudeamus choir, symphony orchestra and Big band.
Auditions, activities, locations and times are visible within the individual groups.
The Unipd Big Band is the jazz orchestra of the Concentus Musicus Patavinus, founded in 2013 by bassist and composer Alessandro Fedrigo, made up of students, alumni, lecturer and technical-administrative staff.
The Big Band has its own well-defined line-up consisting of a wind section (saxophones, trumpets and trombones) and a rhythm section (piano, guitar, double bass and drums).
Since its foundation, the orchestra has performed over 70 performances including concerts, both in universities (Science For All, Unifest, 800 years Unipd, International Jazz Day Unesco, etc.) and in national jazz festivals (Sile Jazz, Umbria Jazz, Vicenza Jazz, Jazz Area Metropolitana, Novara Jazz, etc.), with classical orchestras (Asclepio Ensemble, Nova Symphonia Patavina, Orchestra and Choirs of the Concentus Musicus Patavinus) and internationally renowned soloists (M. Polga, E. Martin, M. Morganti), and concert-lessons in local schools in collaboration with music critics (S. Merighi, E. Bettinello). Over the years, the direction has been handled by Alessandro Fedrigo (2013-19), Michele Polga (2020-21) and Franco Nesti (2022-23).
The orchestra presents a varied repertoire starting from the '30s and from the two pillars, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, including soloists and arrangers who have played a key role in the evolution of orchestral jazz: Gil Evans, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Jaco Pastorius, George Russell, Kenny Wheeler, Maria Schneider, also touching musicians who have only touched jazz, like Frank Zappa, but who still left an indelible mark on the music of the '900.
Participation is open to the entire academic and city community.
Rehearsals are held on Thursdays from 8 pm to 10:30 pm twice a week.

The Ceol group (chiòl, "music" in Gaelic) of the Concentus Musicus Patavinus stands as a center for the study, practice and promotion of traditional Irish music. The group's activities are structured in weekly meetings focused on learning and performing instrumental pieces (jigs, reels, polkas, hornpipes, etc.) and on deepening historical, cultural and musicological aspects. Combining conviviality and musical passion with a focus on the cultural dimension of traditional Irish music, the group promotes the organization of sessions, concerts and cultural events.
Based on the values of sociability and inclusiveness typical of the culture linked to traditional Irish music, the group is open to anyone from the academic and city community who wants to participate, regardless of the level of ability on their instrument and without age limits. Typical instruments of the Irish musical tradition are the violin, the Irish bagpipes, the tin whistle, the flute, the concertina, the accordion, the mandolin, the banjo, the harp, and - with some limitations - the guitar, the bouzouki and the bodhrán. Anyone who wants to study the pieces even on an instrument other than these or with only the voice, is still welcome.

Composed of about twenty-four choristers and choristers, many of them young musicians, the Chamber Choir focuses mainly on the sacred and profane Renaissance and Baroque repertoire, without neglecting contemporary choral music. When the performance requires the presence of instrumental ensembles, the choir relies on musicians who specialize in the use of period instruments.
Founded in 1979, the Chamber Choir has tackled repertoires of great value and originality. Since 2000, he has released four CDs, two of which contain world premiere recordings of unreleased works, contributing to the dissemination of rare and little-known pieces.
To join the Chamber Choir it is necessary to know how to read music and pass an audition.

The Medieval Singing Choir of the Concentus Musicus Patavinus, directed by Maestro Massimo Bisson and born from the experience of the Gregorian Chant group, intends to provide participants with basic training on the various vocal repertoires of the Middle Ages (both sacred and profane).
The choir is made up of students and, since its foundation, has performed in various concerts, both in universities and in national festivals and exhibitions. Unique in the national university scene, the medieval singing choir aims to provide participants with a basic literacy on the ancient vocal repertoire of the West, addressing issues concerning the history and diffusion of songs, together with the deepening of performance and interpretative techniques.
The Medieval Singing Choir of the Concentus Musicus Patavinus resumes activity for the 2024/25 academic year and invites students to participate starting from Friday 18 October at 4.30 pm, in room AIS2 of the Capitanio.
The tests are heldon Fridays from 4.30 pm to 7 pm, in Aula AIS2 of the Capitanio on a weekly basis.

The Gaudeamus Choir, originally Coro Grande del Concentus Musicus Patavinus, is committed to bringing people closer to music in all its forms, giving the opportunity to perform pieces of different genres and periods, ranging from the sacred to the profane to the goliardic. The repertoire includes famous pieces such as Vivaldi's Credo , Mozart's Coronation Mass and Requiem , Fauré's Requiem , Orff's Carmina Burana , Verdi's Requiem and Cherubini's Requiem.
Over the years, the Gaudeamus Choir has collaborated with important orchestras and choirs, both nationally and internationally, always keeping faith with the institutional commitments with the University. His participation in official events such as honorary degrees and inaugurations of the academic year testifies to his constant presence and importance in university life.
Participation in the Choir is open to the entire academic and city community.
The Coro Grande rehearses every Tuesday evening from 8.30 pm to 10.30 pm in room L at Palazzo Bo.

The Concentus Musicus Patavinus Symphony Orchestra, made up of about forty musicians, is open to students and staff of the University of Padua.
Participation in the Orchestra offers the opportunity to live an enriching musical experience, exploring a repertoire that embraces masterpieces from the Baroque period to the post-Romantic. Over the years, works by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Dvořák and many other composers have been performed, with some incursions into other musical genres, performing, for example, pieces by Franco Battiato, Giorgio Gaber, Ennio Morricone.
Over time, the Concentus Orchestra has performed in some prestigious concert halls in Veneto, Trentino and Lombardy, also collaborating with renowned soloists and renowned conductors.
The Orchestra welcomes musicians of any level and without age limits. All instruments are welcome, especially strings (violins, violas, cellos and double basses), oboes and horns. The winds play in rotation.
The rehearsals take place every Tuesday from 20:30 to 23 at the Hall of the Giants of Palazzo Liviano, in Piazza Capitaniato in Padua.
Any changes to campus will be communicated in advance.
