Open Badge and Micro-credentials Committee
The Council of the European Union defines Micro-credentials as: "the record of the learning outcomes that a learner has acquired following a small volume of learning. These learning outcomes will have been assessed against transparent and clearly defined criteria. Learning experiences leading to micro-credentials are designed to provide the learner with specific knowledge, skills and competences that respond to personal, cultural, societal or labour market needs. The learner owns the micro-credentials, which can be shared, are transferable and may be stand-alone or combined into larger credentials. They are underpinned by quality assurance following agreed standards in the relevant sector or area of activity."
(Council Recommendation of 16 June 2022 on a European approach to micro-credentials for lifelong learning and employability, p. 5, art. 5(a))
Compared with the traditional certificate, micro-credentials have the advantage of making the acquired and certified competences more readily usable by communicating them quickly and reliably, including on social channels. They are, in fact, a digital certification that cannot be forged, is easy to use and is effective for actively seeking employment or for career progression.
Below are the Guidelines approved by the Academic Senate (6 February 2024) and the Board of Governors (30 January 2024).
