Abstract:

This new configuration of tanks and stack for redox flow batteries has been designed to achieve greater control of the electrolyte flow: by avoiding large voltage fluctuations, it is possible to optimise the exchange of electric current between the battery and the grid.

Description:

In order to feed into the distribution network, in a stable and continuous manner, the electrical energy produced from renewable energy sources, production plants must include large energy storage systems. Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs) are already used within small- or large-scale electrical grids.

This patent presents an RFB architecture designed to optimise battery voltage control in all its phases.  The modulation of the state of charge within each tank is made possible by dividing it into compartments, into which the electrolyte can be directed as desired by means of solenoid valves.  In addition to the division of the tank, the stack is also divided into various sub-stacks. Thanks to the system of motorised valves, the electronic Battery Management System makes it possible to manage the state of charge of the solutions fed into the sub-stacks. The result is therefore a system capable of allowing output voltage control in a more versatile way than existing techniques.

Advantages:

  • Simplifies the management of redox flow batteries;
  • Lowers maintenance costs because it prevents electrolyte precipitation;
  • Helps manage the current exchange between the battery and the grid;
  • Versatile voltage management;
  • Interfaces with BMS management systems.

Applications:

  • Industrial installations with redox flow batteries;
  • Micro-grid systems.
