Benedetto Gui is Professor of Economics at Sophia University Institute (Florence, Italy). He has previously been Full Professor at the Universities of Bari (1996-97) and Padova (1997-2014), and Associate Professor at the Universities of Trieste (1986-1991) and Venice (1991-96). He holds a degree in Applied Mathematics from the University of Padova (1973, cum laude) and has spent research periods at various academic institutions, including: Cornell University, European University Institute, Cambridge University, London School of Economics, Stanford University, Boston University, University of East Anglia. His main research interests include: the economics of participatory, co-operative and non-profit enterprises; the role of other-regarding motivations in economic choices; and the economic implications of interpersonal relations. He is the author of numerous chapters of edited books, of articles published in international journals (including the Journal of Comparative Economics and the Journal of Labor Economics), of a book on employment subsidies (Giuffrè, 1990, Tarantelli award for the best Italian book in Labour Economics 1990-91), and of an introductory textbook on the economic system (in Italian). He has co-edited with Avner Ben-Ner The Nonprofit Sector in the Mixed Economy (Michigan University Press, 1993), and with Robert Sugden Economics and social interaction: Accounting for interpersonal relations (Cambridge University Press, 2005). He has acted as referee for various international journals, including: Journal of Comparative Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of Economics (Zeitschrift fuer Nationaloekonomie), Journal of Population Economics, Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations. He is a member of the management board of Annals of Public and Cooperative Economics (Blackwell) and of the International Commission of the Economy of Communion Movement.
