Bosco 800

Through an agreement with the municipality of Asiago, an area has in fact been identified for reforestation, covering a total of 8 hectares, in a historic and highly visible area between Asiago and Monte Zebio, dear to the writer Mario Rigoni Stern, who was awarded an honorary degree in Forest and Environmental Sciences in Padua. In his works, the writer highlighted the close connection between natural laws and the behavior of forest ecosystems and, on this basis, criticized the reforestation methods adopted on the Altipiano dei Sette Comuni at the end of the First World War, almost foreseeing the serious consequences that such management would have had for the forest heritage following Storm Vaia.

In each hectare, about 2,000 young plants of different species were planted. To replace the fallen Norway spruce trees, specimens of larch, beech, rowan, laburnum, silver fir, birch, whitebeam, and goat willow were planted. The variety of the new species planted guarantees the biodiversity of the area and at the same time promotes the future development of a forest that is strong and resilient to climate change and possible extreme natural events.

And the reforestation project that we have launched represents a concrete example of our commitment – states Rector Daniela Mapelli - University of Padua makes sustainability, in all its forms—environmental, economic, and social—a founding value. The University, so closely linked to these lands, rooted for 800 years in the territory that hosts it, felt a duty to take action, to set expertise and passion in motion: we hope that the “forest of the 800 years” may remain a visible memory of our commitment».

The reforestation activity, which began in autumn 2022, was made possible thanks to the generosity of many people, companies, bodies, and associations that believed in the importance of this project.
