Sergej Monavari obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2022 at the Geometry Center of Utrecht University (The Netherlands). He then joined the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) as a Collaborateur Scientifique in the Arithmetic Geometry group.
His research lies at the intersection of pure mathematics and modern theoretical physics, focusing on the geometric structures of moduli spaces—parameter spaces that classify geometric subvarieties, or solutions to differential equations, with prescribed boundary conditions on a target manifold. More specifically, his work involves computing partition functions from moduli spaces of stable sheaves on complex Calabi-Yau varieties, typically using exact algebraic localization techniques. This framework is known to provide a mathematically rigorous description of instanton dynamics in Calabi-Yau compactifications within type II string theories.
As part of his MSCA project, Dr. Monavari studies partition functions of Gromov-Witten and Donaldson-Thomas invariants from Calabi-Yau orbifolds – geometric objects locally described as the quotient of a manifold by the action of a finite group – by integrating methods from algebraic geometry, topological quantum field theory and string theory.
