Giovanni Mandolino graduated in Classics at the University of Pisa (2016) and is a former student of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa (2011-2016). He earned his PhD in Arabic Philosophy at the University of Padua (2020), where he has carried out his postdoctoral research so far.
His research focuses on the transmission of philosophical and Christian theological thought from Greek into Arabic from Graeco-Roman late antiquity to the Arab world (6 th -11 th centuries). He is especially interested in philosophically cultivated varieties of late patristic Christian theology, such as Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite and John Philoponus, and in their eastern aftermath.
His MSCA project, devoted to the medieval Arabic translations of the Greek treatise On Celestial Hierarchy by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, will be hosted by the University of Padua, Department of Historical and Geographic Sciences and the Ancient World (DiSSGeA), under the supervision of Prof. Cecilia Martini. During the outgoing phase, he will carry out his research also in Halifax (Canada), at Dalhousie University, under the supervision of Prof. Alexander Treiger; and in Aubervilliers, at the Institut de Recherche et d’Histoire des Textes (IRHT).
